Latin Empire & Frankish States, Painting Help
« on: May 25, 2021, 07:06:29 PM »
After a 15 month plague hiatus, our gang is getting back for DBA gaming.  Starting to add a new thematic period for our group — Medieval Balkans.  I think I'll be adding Serbian and Bulgarians as a matched opponent/ally pair to start with.  Looking at the extended neighborhood for friends and enemies for potential later additions called my attention to IV/32 for the first time ever.

I'm glad the extended notes in DBM and DBA 3.0 helped decipher that what Barker calls Romanian Franks is in fact what most everyone else calls Latin Empire and Frankish States.  Not a period I'm strongly familiar with, and I would not have guessed that.

Does anyone happen to know of any useful armorial sources for painting help with this army?

I presume they stopped sporting any Crusaders' Crosses some time after the highly successful conclusion of the 4th Crusade and the conquest of the Christians.

A sadly now gone site made by an American wargaming group called the Perfect Captain actually did a miniatures campaign complete with map and OOBs for fighting in the Greek peninsula and Balkans with those Frankish states and their many enemies.

Here is one site's url I have which might just have files for that particular campaign:

As for banners and shield blazons, I can't think of anything right now but I might also have that campaign somewhere in my hard drive. I will try and find it but no promises, I could have deleted it.

Wow, thank you MGH!

Even if there isn't any armorial info tucked away in there, that should be quite the trove of useful information.  This is a corner of Medieval History that I am currently pretty ignorant about beyond the most superficial outlines, so looking forward to going through those files!

Just got a book via ABE — the 1964 B&N reprint of Latins in the Levant by William Miller, 1908.

At first skimming, this looks like it will be a good read, and should ultimately prove very useful painting too.  There's no immediate armorial help in the text.  However, it names plenty of names, so once I settle on a particular time frame for painting, I suspect that looking up the individuals should uncover a lot of coats or arms, particularly from the Angevin crowd.

It's the ad for it but when you try to download it, it says it no longer exists.  :'(

The Perfect Captain files are all available on the Facbook group of the same name.

Hi Cat,

When researching my own Serbian DBM army I came across the Illyrian Armorials. They're a collection is partially real and partially fictional heraldic books. The main one I used for my Knights was this one: https://m.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.249387255098830.51194.177309975639892&type=1, but there are others. While not being strictly for the Latin Empire, it gave me a good enough idea. Hope that helps!
