Dorchester Armored Command Vehicles #3 & #5?
« on: July 20, 2021, 04:15:56 AM »
I have been painting vehicles for my early North Africa campaign, and I have noticed that two of the Dorchester armored command vehicles painted in the Caunter Scheme have large white numbers on them.  One has a large white 3.  The other has a large white 5.  Can someone tell me the name of the commanders whose vehicles these are?  Thank you.

They belonged to Rommel!

However he wasn't the original owner. https://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/afvclub/af35227.html has some details on those particular machines.

Thank you.  I am aware that the Germans captured three Dorchesters in North Africa.  Numbers 3 and 5 are probably two of them, but whose Dorchesters were they before Rommel?  I think the British also numbered a Dorchester with a large white 1 and another with a large white 2.  What British commander or unit were those linked to?

I now for certain that the Dorchester with the large white 2 is one of the three captured by the Germans in North Africa.  I believe that 3 and 5 are the other two captured by the Germans.  Unfortunately, I have no information as to what other Dochesters that remained in British service in North Africa carried large white singlel digit numbers.  It's looking more like I will be learning my British Dorchesters without that numbering system.

The link above says that the Dorchesters with the large white numbers were from the 2nd Armoured Division (towards the bottom in the decals section)

Fred, thank you for pulling me back to that.  It appears that the three Dorchesters that were captured are No. 1,  No. 2 (I've seen a photo of it with the 2 and a German cross) and  No. 3.  That makes since and the info you took me back to shows that No. 5 was not captured.  This is really good.  Thank you very much.
