I’ve put the East Gate in position, here. My plan is to have both these models up against the table edge. It’s good to see how the different heights work together. And also the closing in of the urban space!

I’ve decided to increase the height of the mound by sticking another tile on top. My main concern is whether I can design a ramp that can rise from the level of the South Gate up to the top of the mound in the available space. And especially, design a ramp that isn’t so steep that my Trojan warriors instantly fall over!

Putting a house of the Lower City on the outside of the wall gives a sense of scale and a chance to see the different styles of houses together, and how the setup from the Lower City up to the Citadel Mound will shape up.

What a wonderful project  :o :o :o

I understand you are doing your own MDF designs - great!
However, the finishing of the stone structures is even more amazing for me.

Keep up this work, I'll regularly watch.

This is a cracking project.  Are you texturing the walls or just painting them?  The stones look especially good.

Thanks for all the comments!

Next up, another citadel house.

This model is a timber-framed mud-brick building without a substructure. It has its doorway on the short side. I’ve tried again to produce some finer door and shutter styles for this up-market house.

I’ve made a separate stonework substructure as a frame for the house to stand on. This means that the house will need steps up to the door.

The frame, however, is sized to be the same height as one of my polystyrene tiles so the door can actually stand level with the other building’s walkway, like two houses on either side of the same pavement.

I’ve added a stepped ramp from the raised level down to the ground level to stand alongside the house, which has the effect of extending the walkway.

The eagle-eyed may have noticed that my first house for Troy’s Citadel has a somewhat narrow doorway. That’s the ochre-yellow house I’m talking about. There’s a reason for this. I was trying to leave enough room for the steps up to the door without these getting in the way of the doorway of my planned second citadel house.

I now need to get to work on a bit of house decoration and finish the new model.

I painted the latest citadel house.

I took the opportunity, once more – unlike with the more drab Lower City houses – to paint this up-market house with a bit of colour. Although, at the same time, I chose to feature the colour scheme with a simple earth colour – that is, a colour whose pigment could be obtained from readily available minerals and clays.

The idea with this dwelling, again, is that the main living quarters are upstairs. I designed the downstairs windows to reflect a more utilitarian use.

It’s more obvious now that the pavement needs finishing.

Very nice Mike.

Thanks, swiftnick! A lonely voice but a welcome one!

I completed (for now) this Citadel sector by making some pavement areas and a retaining wall for the raised walkway.

The pavement adds more of an urban feel to the space between the two houses. It’s beginning to look more and more like a miniature Bronze Age encounter is about to take place.

Adding this second retaining wall to the setup reinforces the fact that Troy was built on a mound. This particular wall, though, is also of interest to a scenario based around the East Gate as although it’s a rather ordinary looking wall it was also a cunning defensive feature.

Imagine yourself managing to break through the first gateway of the East Gate to be confronted by the second gateway. Missiles falling from above, somehow you manage to break through this as well. Mission accomplished! Like a great, big mythological wooden horse, you’ve made it into the mighty Citadel of Troy! However, you are now confronted with yet another obstacle – a high wall stands before you. From the cover of this wall, you are being pelted with even more missiles. It’s another killing zone as the defenders on the battlement behind you continue to fire down on you. In confusion, you have to make a quick decision – whether to turn left or right. The more you hesitate, the more you remain prey to enemy fire but if you choose to go right, you will unfortunately reach a dead-end, forcing you to return along the narrow channel back into the killing zone.

Given that this is the Bronze Age and fortification was designed to thwart low-level attacks rather than counter the great engines of future siege warfare, the day-to-day accessibility of Troy’s East Gate does a remarkably good job at hiding a series of pretty ingenious defensive features.
