More Numidians. FINISHED!
« on: May 30, 2021, 05:21:52 PM »
Rather than steel the other thread I’ve started my own.

Project,
Finish a complete plastic army, I’ve used plastic in the past but never a full ancient army.

Figures, Victrix, absolutely superb.
Spent two weeks assembling them and basing up plus under coat.
(Laborious but actually I’m in no hurry so I enjoyed that part)

Approximately 160 figures, horses etc.

Started painting today, thought I’d start on the less complex skirmish dudes.

I’m going to start on a big unit of poor quality warriors next, so these get helmets and bigger shields with perhaps a dash more colour?

Very good start.  :-* :-*    I agree the Victrix Numidians are probably their best figures

Nice start! Seems that Numidians are a hot topic in ancient wargaming nowadays!

Bit hot today, so paint was drying too quickly.
Never mind, these are some close order infantry.

Nice idea. You have more patience than me. I have a whole phalanx of Victrix Thebans. Nicely separated into six or seven bins of heads, arms, shields, etc. Sitting there for  a year. Attempted Covid-19 stir crazy therapy, don't cut, just assemble 64 Thebans.

They are still there in case.... I do hate assembling plastics. Good job on yours and plastics give you lots of choices with Numidians.

Cheers guys.
Big green movement tray is hand made from ABS.
It’s just holding the figures whilst I paint them.
I will be using MDF from Warbases when finished.

I actually enjoyed putting these figures together, but agreed it is time consuming, just glad I wasn’t in a rush.
I’m really impressed with the basic Numidian infantry set.
The difference between my skirmish units and the formed unit is quite amazing considering it’s all from one box!

I’m going to multi base these close formation figures, into a unit of 40, but I’ll cheat a little and only paint 36 actual figures!

I need to get started on a unit of cavalry next, as I’ve got three units in all, maybe 4 if I look at a Spanish bodyguard?
Jeff, maybe you could help with that?
Was Jubas bodyguard Spanish and Gallic mercenary types? Or just Spanish?

Looking great, Tim. Are the elephants transfers?

Hi Simon,
Yeah good old Veni Vidi Vici?
I like the way I can paint over them to achieve a hand painted look.

Don’t get me wrong the LBM transfers are awesome, but looking at my army, it was going to cost £36+ Not a massive problem, but I wanted a more unique looking force.
This is my second Numidian army I’ve painted, the first being mostly Crusader models.

I’m after a muted look, nothing too bright. Maybe even poor looking?
I may introduce a dull madder red into the imitation legionaries?

I’m kind of making it up as I go along!

Opinions on the skirmish cavalry please,
Should I do them just leather or wood effect as the skirmish infantry.
OR
Should I do them the same as the formed infantry above, white with black elephant.
OR
Should I attempt some primitive animal skin type effect, hand painted of course!
