28mm French Revolutionary Wars?
« on: June 09, 2021, 10:10:04 AM »
Hi all,

What's the consensus on the French Revolutionary wars in 28mm?  I'm thinking circa 1792-1801, probably more the later part, especially Italy ot Egypt.  How do the various ranges match up size and style wise?

This is what I'm aware of:

Eureka
https://www.eurekaminuk.com/collections/wars-of-the-french-revolution

Brigade Games Egypt range
https://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/Napoleonic-French_c_339.html

EMPEROR TOADS EMPORIUM
https://emperortoadsemporium.co.uk/store

Trent Miniatures
https://arcanesceneryandmodels.co.uk/product-category/trent-miniatures/

Elite Miniatures
http://www.eliteminiatures.co.uk/iainf.html

Perry Miniatures
https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product-category/metal-ranges/napoleonic/french-in-egypt/

Have I missed any others?  I don't think there are revolutionary period plastics but are any of the Consular/Imperial era plastics easy to convert?

Who does the best flags?

GMD seem to do some.

Thoughts or links to others' projects appreciated.

Cheers,

I don’t know of any other manufacturers myself. Once Eureka releases their Piedmont-Sardinian forces, I will start doing the campaigns of the army of Italy. I think Perry miniatures French Hussars can be used for the wars of the French Revolution but don’t take that as gospel, I’d have to check again to be sure.
I have nothing important to say so just keep on scrolling.

There is a very long thread with many pictures of figures in various states of painting on An Argader forum (in French) but its specific project is the battle of Quiberon (Brittany) 1795:

Link to an AAR two years ago with some of the same figures and players:

Lots to see at ~

if you go via the sidebar to French Revolutionary War. I have figures from 11 different manufacturers represented. You hardly notice the difference in style etc on the table we find.

Dixon Miniatures have a large range. Same scale and sculptor of their Grand Alliance figures the Dromedary Corps are especially good.

Thanks for all the input, that's very helpful and inspiring.  Some great armies and scenery there with lots to look through.

I remembered foundry do some revolutionary war figures

and also Victorius do some British

I haven't been able to find any size comparison shots yet but I haven't search all the links above.

I am personally in love with Emperor Toad's work. Their range coverage for the Revolutionary Wars is excellent and I am very happy with their Vendeens. They actually recently released a whole slew of new models for republican French armies

I'd love to do this period but in smaller scales, 15/10 or 6mm

Any ideas on suppliers

The Emperor’s Toad figures look very nice. I have also looked in the past looked at the Trent Miniatures range sold by Northstar but these seem to have disappeared from their website. I even bought a few character packs

Does anyone know what has happened to Trent Miniature?

 Thanks

FYI, you can definitely use some of the Perry plastics for the Revolutionary period, like their French Hussars, Austrian Cav. You need some basic conversion skills but all is possible, and easier in plastic!

Thanks for extra comments.

That was sad news about Duncan.  The Trent figures do seem to still be available here.

Well remembered on those generals from CP models Traveller.  They are rather good.  I'd seen them before but forgotten where.  Pity they don't do them mounted or just more of a range, the sculpting is great.  Nice guy to buy from in past experience too.

Good tips.  The Perrys do Bicorn heads too that might be useful.

I found a few more manufacturers too.

Old Glory have some Egypt figures
http://oldgloryuk.com/napoleon-in-egypt/9/68

Their 1807 French might do as well.  Are there significant changes in the uniform from the 1790s?  Is it just the coat length?  I've looked at pictures and nothing leaps out.
http://oldgloryuk.com/1807-infantry-in-campaign-dress/bicorn/9/29/106/105

These victrix French infantry are the same and in plastic.
https://www.victrixlimited.com/collections/french-napoleonics/products/french-napoleonic-infantry-1804-1807

I generally prefer metal as I like the heft but the new plastics are now very good and much easier to convert or kitbash.

I haven't done 15mm in ages, my eyes are too bad now.  AB were very nice in those days but I can't remember if they did Revolutionary war.  My club mates have done later Napoleonics in 28mm and it does get a bit crowded with big units.  The depth is the biggest issue.  Tables can be wider and deeper but arms to reach the middle don't get any longer.  :D
