Looking for 28mm Soviets with helmets in summer uniforms?
« on: June 10, 2021, 12:58:22 PM »
So, as I'm coming to the end of building my Germans and Americans for late war I'm looking for the above, all suggestions welcome, even more appreciated if you can vouch for the quality!

I can't be bothered with Warlord's fiddly, separate weapon plastics any more so I'm going for metals I think - I'm planning to use Bad Squiddo ladies in part (already got the scouts).

Of course, if anyone has an inside track on Warlord releasing new, less fiddly, helmeted options, I could hold out.  I'll just do Brits in the meantime instead!

The thing that defines Late War Soviets from Early War are the shoulderboards. Prior to '43 they had no shoulderboards, afterwards yes. Thus Warlord's plastics are (mostly - Western designers have issues being consistent with them) unsuitable for latewar anyway.

Have a look at Artizan Designs, single piece metal castings, good character, good range, at least some have the shoulder boards.

Cheers - that's useful to understand.

Looks like two useful squad packs in the Artizan range.  Not as many helmets as I'd like (I just think they're an interesting shape) but they look good overall.

Thanks again!

cypher - I like The Assault Group. They are more realistically proportioned and better posed than Artizan in my view. But it's all down to taste

Your cheapest option is probably the Plastic Soldier Company, although these are in the pre-1943 uniform.  No doubt these would still be in use until they wore out, so you could justify using them later in the war, too!  Poses are a bit rigid but the price is nice.  Plus they have additional sets with crewed weapons (they are Soviets, so you can make your own crude/crewed jokes) including AT guns.

Whilst there are some padded jackets mixed in, the best late war Soviets IMO are the Eureka ones. Exquisite sculpts and there is a mix of support weapons in the range.

Crusader are also one to look at

If you can hold on, Empress plan to do WW2 Russians though not sure exactly on timescales.

Carlos - I'm afraid that the Eureka sculpts, beautifully proportioned as they are, are a bit of a mess, uniform-wise. They have the high collar of the later uniform but most have no shoulder boards. The sculptor seems to have had the mistaken idea that only officers and NCOs had them.

True but as the OR’s shoulder boards were soft, remedying that can be as easy as a strip of foil or a dab of the paint brush.

I thought Empress was hinting at doing some late war Soviets' at the begging of the year. But I might be miss remembering things.

Thanks for the further comments.  The Crusader/Artizan offerings look very paintable and nicely detailed.  Some of the Eureka minis might mix in as well.

I'll have to take another look at the TAG option, I'd forgotten they did them!

Cheers again, I knew this was the place to ask  :D
