Shaka Zulu by Mark Copplestone
« on: June 09, 2021, 04:16:59 PM »
I know Mr Copplestone has a few fans on this forum, so I thought I'd share this with you.

He was persuaded to join in Wargames Illustrated's Giants in Miniature range this month, and he's designed a 28mm figure of Shaka Zulu. And very nice it is too.

Just purchased mine as it’s a limited edition casting. It’s not cheap for a single foot figure + p&p.  But it’s just got to be done.

very cool. Though oddly he doesn't look like a Copplestone sculpt  to me. Don't know if its the angle of the photo, the paint job or  if Mr Copplestone has changed his style a bit still a lovely miniature though.

A variant.

Has anyone tried gaming Mfecane era wars? I wonder if it would make an interesting change not run your Zulus at a British gun line?

I've played the Mfecane.

I played a huge battle using Hail Caesar.

I've also played a couple of games using our Death in the Dark Continent rules. In those games, Warriors on warriors is an explosive experience, nearly always in favour of the attacker so it was about getting in quick.

Cool thanks I guess thinking about it ancients rules might be more suitable than colonial rules for the Mfecane.

Mine arrived in the post this morning. Looking forward to painting him up. He will replace the Shaka figure from Steve Barber models that I purchased many moons ago.

The Hail Caesar game was Impi on Impi, Shaka V Mzilikazi I think, so suited regiments V regiments. Not so sure about opponents who didn't have a regimental structure like the Zulus, but of course they were pretty much swept away by Shaka so it wouldn't make for much of a game anyway.

Death in the Dark Continent was written for inter-Tribal warfare as much as for Colonial invasions, so it gives a good game, but again, warrior societies tend to sweep away all opponents until firearms are introduced.

There's a 'lite' version of DITDC free with this issue of Wargames Illustrated:
