Cold War Gone Hot - Playtesters Required
« on: June 19, 2021, 09:36:01 AM »
Good Morning People;

Many of you already know that I am a wargames author for Osprey, having written the Crusade era skirmish game Outremer: Faith and Blood a couple of years ago!

I have recently been playtesting my latest set of rules with my close gaming group and I am nearly ready to release them for a wider beta test. This game will be released by Osprey next year. It is set during the Cold War in the mid 80s.

The game is set at the platoon level and is designed for 20mm and 15mm games.

If you are interested in being one of the playtesters please respond below with the following information:

Your name/nickname:
Email address:
Country:
Do you have a Cold War 15mm/20mm army already?
If so what country/nation do these figures represent?
What is your level of gaming experience?

Cheers

JR

Just because I am nosey I have to ask why if its platoon level its aimed at 15 and 20mm figures? Platoon seems to be the ceiling level for 28mm. However being blind to the rules mechanics there is probably a very good reason. ;)

I just might be interested.  I was an M1 tank platoon leader in Germany in the mid 80s, and I co-authored Cold War Gone Hot for Force on Force 2.  Do you want our info posted here in this thread, or PM'ed to you?

JR, 1980s Cold War is an area of interest for my gaming group, albeit we mainly play Company level "Combined Arms" engagements, and currently use "Seven Days to the River Rhine". Between us we can field Russian ( GSFG, VDV and Naval Infantry), Canadian, BAOR and Danish forces in 15mm. Another mate has Russian and BAOR in 20mm.

We are pretty experienced gamers albeit today we are more looking for  "playability" rather than 100% "historical" accuracy and prefer simple rules to those with masses of
 weapon data sheets and pages of tables.

Does this answer your question?

Regards

Hi Guys;

Thanks for volunteering, apologies for the delayed response to some of your PMs, I work in Law Enforcement for the day job (sadly rules writing isn't lucrative enough to give up work) and as you can imagine the last month has been absolutely crazy.

I'm just putting together a spreadsheet with your details and will get a copy of the draft rules out to you once I have given them another final once over.

Again cheers for the assist and apologies for the break in comms.

Cheers

JR

Good Evening Volunteers!!

You should all have an initial draft of the rules in your emails now, along with details for joining a playtesters Facebook Group!

Thank you for the offer of assistance!!

All the best

JR

Can you tell us more about the rules? Dice or card-driven? IGUGO or something different?

I had a  20mm m113 infantry company, Improved TOW platoon and a company of M60A3 tanks. But can't seem to locate them. Can't remember if they are in storage or sold on.
But I still have 2 platoons of NVA, 1 Soviet who I am debating painting uo as Cezchs and a US infantry platoon. All 28mm, from under fire mins.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Nurgle, the rules are aimed at a platoon level "infantry game" with few heavy weapons or vehicles. At the start of a turn each player rolls D6 to determine who goes 1st, and then play proceeds via I-Go/U-Go with each side alternating activation of their squads/fireteams. Units can make 3 activations per turn being move, shoot, take-cover, close-quarter-battle or rally. They are pretty simple rules with much of the book covering unit stats and a  "campaign" element . This will appeal to some but other gamers will want more complexity.

Sounds great, simple, fast and dirty. So, any special things, that make it unique? Like the noise-system in Blackops?
