Can anyone recommend good books on Charles the bold?
« on: June 19, 2021, 08:21:21 PM »
Would anyone be able to recommend any books on Charles the Bold,  his father and the. Struggles around Burgandy from 1460 to 1477. I'm  currently researching for a book centred on the Burgundian court and the WOTR, particularly the seige of Caistor Castle by the Duke of Norfolk.
Thank you in advance for any assistance

Charles the Bold: The Last Valois Duke of Burgundy (History of Valois Burgundy), Richard Vaughan is excellent.

If you're thinking "armies" then buy The Burgundian Army of Charles the Bold, Pat McGill, Armand Pacou & Rod E. Riddell publication from the Lance and Longbow Soceity here (scroll of Miscellaneous):

For Charles Comte de Charolais, before Charles became Duke:
Montlhery, 16 juillet 1465, Gaillard P. is a great book (if you read French? If not it's worth buying and translating the captions etc as their is wealth of heraldic information within the book:

Vaughan wrote a series on the lives of the Valois dukes of Burgundy which commence from the ascension of the duke to the throne.  So for the period from 1460-1467 ( ish) you will need the volume on Charles' father Phillippe.

Its been a few years since I read the books, so don't rightly recall if the seige you mentioned is mentioned,  From a slightly different perspective there is Charles Murray Kendall on Louis XI.   Very readable however, the author seems to follow Commynes very closely and ignores the Flemish and Burgundian sources.  This means it does at times come across as hero worship of the universal spider.

this one is more centred on the Burgundian rule of Flanders and whilst it has been on my shelf I have yet to read it :

I enjoyed J. Calmette's "The Golden Age of Burgundy" (translated 1962) which covers 1364-1477.   I am also looking to sell my hardback copy (£3.00 plus £3.20 UK postage).

If you want a Hollywood take on it, I believe Charles the Bold is quite central to the plot in:

The Adventures of Quentin Durward - strarring Robet Taylor, it was I think part of his historic trilology which included Knights of the Round Table and Ivanhoe.

I often like to have a hollywood spectacle to hand to watch during teatime/painting to help keep inspired while working through a project.
Although over than the names of characters and locations, its always hit n miss whats history and whats hollywood, and mostly hollywood than historical accuracy.
