Do-OOO-onnng! Voting for BSC2021 starts now! Come and see!
« on: June 24, 2021, 10:13:11 PM »
Finally, friends all final entries for Round one of this years Build Something Contest have been posted. As usual (you tend to forget this between competitions) running the competition involves quite a bit of administration (fixing file constraints, searching for lost mail, naming consistncies etc) but now I think we are good.

We have a good turnout this year; twenty one builders cranked out builds to completion. Well done! The Builders and their entries have been placed in four groups and there will be only one winner from each group which will proceed to Round 2. In Round 2, which is a knockout round, builders will be randomly paired to see which two entries will make it to the final Round 3.

There is quite a good mix of themes ! Many experienced old hands have of course turned up again but also a few new faces. Some entries are original, some are beautiful and some are, indeed, very clever. Having perused these entries quite a bit still find it very hard to pick a favorit in each of the four groups.

I strongly suggest that you go back to each builders build thread in the Build Something board an refresh your memory of the build process of each entry. The spirit of the BSC lays very much in the creative process which leads to the completed build.

You have 7 days from today to vote, so go look and vote!

Builders, those of you who make it to Round 2 can chose to send a new picture if you like (some hopefuls already have :) ). Good luck to you all!

You can vote in each thread, as long as you are logged into the forum.

And yes; you can vote for yourself. Whether or not that's in good form is up to you.

There a handful of voting threads, with the entries gathered into groups, rather than voting happening in the individual build threads.

A lot of really top notch entries this year.  Very difficult deciding which entry to vote for in each and every group. Well done to all you participants. Great scratchbuilding all over the place  :)

I do think that only progressing one from each group is rather harsh.

It would have been much nice to progress the top two as proposed in the original rules post by Hammers.

21 to 8 feels more fair than 21 to 4.

Amazing stuff from everyone.  Being my first BSC i will say it very inspiring, motivating, challenging, and overall great fun.  Even though I didn’t make my goal of getting past the first round, it only makes me want to up my effort next time.
Congrats to the round 1 winners. The voting will be so much harder this time.  Best of luck to everyone.

I am really looking forward to the round 2 pairings. In these competitions there is always hard choices; there is always pieces that deserve to advance that don't make it to the next round.

It was an enjoyable round, maybe even the best one if you consider the breadth of themes and entries. :)

While donning my voter hat, I had my shortlist of favourites but also problems deciding the aspects to use as the final criterion. One rough categorisation was between "traditional" difficult terrain you can easily deploy units on versus more elaborate builds. Then further breakdowns follow from that. Universal or highly specialised? Natural or extraordinary? Monumental or subtle? I guess I gave a few "bonus points" to builds which were pretty yet had the feeling of being very playable too, but there was no single deciding factor. Ultimately it was just about gut feeling when no truly objective comparison could have been made.

This was my last full work week before summer holidays and quite packed, of course, thus I didn't have much time or energy to contribute to the general contest buzz. :'( However, I'll try to return to a thing or two now when things are calming down and I'm not going anywhere far yet. In a lucky case I can even make more terrain, which should be the real goal and reward for everyone, in the contest or in general. :)

Also many thanks to Hammers for setting this up, even when it probably wasn't the easiest time slot to do so. I hope it gets slightly easier now. ;)

I agree; I had similar challenges when deciding how to vote.
