1/72 Fantasy Ruins/Buildings Sources?
« on: July 13, 2021, 05:41:56 PM »
Anyone know of a good resource for medieval or fantasy buildings for 1/72 scale? Preferable ruins...easier to paint! ;)
Any structures will be in consideration though...

Why not make them yourself?
Especially easy if you want ruins.

No 3d printer, and if I'm ever going to get all my minis painted (a man can dream) I need to cut corners to save time. Buying pre-made terrain is where I usually do it.

A lot of 28mm stuff (historical, not over-the-top fantasy) works just fine with 1/72. I think I'm right in saying that wargames buildings tend to be a bit undersized as it is, which means that 28mm buildings can look about right with 25mm-tall figures (i.e.. 1/72).

We played a 1/72 game the other day using a few Dave Graffam card buildings that we often use for 28mm skirmish games. They looked just fine. You can also print the files out at different sizes.

I don't know if you're already familiar with Dave Graffam's stuff, but it's regularly on sale at DriveThruRPG/Wargames Vault for $0.99 a file. Each set tends to contain options and different 'skins' for each building, so you can get a lot of variety. There's a free building or two on the site, so you could print one out and assemble it and see how it looks.

For ruins, though, I'd tend to go with making them yourself. Cardboard, a hot-glue gun and some mod podge, and you're good to go. It really doesn't take long.

Have a look at railway scenery - you can find quite a few tudor style houses or castle bits that are the right scale and some of it can be quite cheap, especially if you go digging on ebay.

MiniArt made beautiful plastic medical castle and fortress kits:

https://miniart-models.com/products/72005/
You can still find them on eBay for more than you probably want to pay.

IMEX has a castle that might work for you:
https://www.imex-model.com/product/IMX7250/1-72-AVALON-CASTLE.html?cid=203
and they used to make one with rounded towers... again you might find it hugely overpriced on eBay

Like Hobgoblin, I’m also a fan of Dave Graffam models.  Once you’ve decided to go with 1/72 and gain the advantages of lightness and portability, it just seems to make sense to go with card models to continue the theme.  I have a bunch that I’ve printed at the recommended reduction (probably 65% or so…it’s on the instructions) for “20mm”.  That doesn’t make the parts too small to fold easily.  If you don’t like how your figures look next the buildings at that scale, you can always print them at whatever reduction does please you.

I'd recommend laser-cut buildings either from lasercutterrains or terrains4games - they've got nice selection of wattle-and-daube bulidings.

Have you looked at Amera Plastic Mouldings - http://www.amera.co.uk/
There's plenty there in the way of 1/72 (remember to look in the Airfix section) and some of their 28mm Fantasy is really semi scale-neutral.
I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.
