Battle of Quebec 1759 - Scenario

At the end of June 1759, a British amphibious force under the command of Vice-Admiral Charles Saunders and Major-General Wolfe had laid siege to Québec.

Throughout the summer, Wolfe had vainly tried to lure the Marquis de Montcalm out of his entrenchments between the Saint-Charles and Montmorency rivers, hoping to fight an open battle where his army of regulars would overcome Montcalm's larger army mostly composed of militia.

There is a full description of the battle at Kronoskaf

The battle was designed to be played with Honours of War rules, but can be easily "translated" for other systems.

Rounds: 10

Move and Fire Initiative: British +1

Terrain:
All woods and cornfields (near the river): Soft cover
Cliffs over the river: Impassable. Any unit obliged to retreat with its back to the river cliffs is destroyed.

Special Rules:
All Infantry : No regimental guns
All British Foot: Superior fire
All French Foot: Inferior fire
French foot in battle column: Fires -1, melee +1
All British units not facing the front, may move after the 2nd round.

Highlanders: The Highlanders after a first volley, threw their muskets and charged with the claymore.
When in close musket range distance, they can’t be held. They are impetuous and charge without orders.
After charging, they can’t shoot. Melee +1

Victory Conditions:
Total victory: Break the enemy
If the French don’t break in 10 rounds: Marginal French victory
The British lose two units less than the French: Marginal British victory
All other results: Draw

Last Saturday, I had the joy to visit our club, first time after the confinement.
Two of my dearest buddies were there, Miltiades and MacTakis, to play

The Battle of Quebec

The battle was played with Honours of War rules.
MacTakis took the British and Miltiades and yours truly took the French.
Miltiades commanded the left French wing.

I had made a bigger game map, but it is not needed to depict the city of Quebec on the table, as it played no role in the battle.
This way, a 6' by 4' table is more than sufficient for 15mm figures.

Part of the center and right of the French arrayed on a single line. Two of their central battalions were deployed in deep formation.

I will apologize for not having the historically correct battalions for this battle, my figure collection is focused on Minden.

The red line is closing. The rightmost French battalion stands behind a wall (soft cover) - there were some farmhouses scattered in front of Quebec

French right flank: MacTakis makes a bold move, throwing a battalion against the Canadian militia.
The militia will shoot a volley and evade. At the same time, he puts his flank at enfilading canister fire

Some effective shots by Canadian militia and artillery. The Louisbourg Grenadiers fell back to reform

Also the fearsome Highlanders took a substantial number of hits. MakTakis moves a fresh battalion from the second line, to let the Highlanders recover.

Then, Miltiades decides it is time to charge!

...but they meet a devastating receiving fire and they are mown down like flies!

A huge gap was opened between the French left flank and the center! (Almost historically...)
