Your civilian trains and armoured trains here
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:59:16 AM »
Hi armoured train enthusiasts

some of You may have noticed me blowing my trumpet over my railway project
yep, and I am closing in to the painting stage - however I am not entirely done with some details on the armoured trains and would also need painting inspiration

So please, whoever would like to give me and other interested Wargamers inspiration and advice, please post Your trains here  (I shall post mine as soon as they are done)
- also Company B and other model train manufacturers, please let us drool over Your new (and old products)

we should however post research material somewhere else, since this thread might become very picture heavy

so, here we go then

This is my first attempt of creating an impression of the Russian Guncar built by the Sarmovo works starting with 1918, delivered in many variants.

Some were captured by Poland (along with a variety of armored cars), and remained in service until 1939, being subsequently captured again by Germany, with which it pursued rail security service until 1945

In other words, the perfect armoured vehicle to be used throughout RCW up to WWII

Used parts:
Faller Playtrain carriage
Hexagon and Platformer set
brass naval model guns
some modelling profiles
nails and brass tube for the buffers
and a lot of styrene and glue
This is the WIP to show the construction, more pictures of the undercoated and painted model will come some time later (for the time being, I will be busy with the building contest and build another armoured train).

In gaming terms, it will be used as a SP automotrice, together with a similar (fictional) infantry assault car, which I will also use as an ammunition wagon for my railway gun to come
roofs are detachable to offer the opportunity to add interiors, if I so wish at a later time.

more pictures can be found here

almost forgot:
these two components are rolling on the track, the turrets pivot and the guns swivel,
the MG are fixed

Now that is brilliant. Excellent use of the platformer stuff - I got a box of various of the kits in stowage which I received as payment for a painting commission and intend to use for the scaffolding on my Fallout "Jefferson Memorial", but I would never have considered such a use.

If I may express a little reservation, it does look a bit too futuristic for a proper "Interwar/RCW" feel for my taste (due to the detail on the Platformer parts), but don´t let that distract you. I think you could get a lot out of that with a decent paintjob, and could then use it as a postapocalyptic Russian armoured train as well ("Transarctica", anyone?).

Are you going to add armoured skirts to protect the running gear, and if so, what will you use for that purpose?

thx
Yes, that was my reservation about the platformer stuff too, but if I don't paint out the monitors and the keypads etcetera or file them down a little bit, it won't matter
it is meant to not look like an authentic replica, but as something that resembles the original
this way I can use it for pulp and steampunk too

this batch I chose to represent something between fully improvised on the way to serial, so no, these won't get skirts
I have several photos of the "Sarmowo" type, and they all look a bit diferent - meaning that on the same blueprints, they were built with whatever was at hand
some have armoured skirts, some not; some are on bogies, some not; etc

The Orlik hovever, which will soon feature in the Building Contest, I will try to get more to the original, serial look.
The OV locomotive and tender are almost done, but the Zaamuretz and the two Khunkhuz Gun Wagons are not started yet, and these I will submit for the contest  (if I manage to get it done).
these will all be fully armoured with skirts etc

As a principle, I rather don't like the "clean plate" design of most armoured trains, so the overburdened platformer stuff comes in just right

not exactly sure how to understand this comment  ;) 8)
Anyway, here come the undercoated models.
Obviously, I am going to experiment with rusting.
Again more pictures under the above link

Painting will take some time...

I have shown this before but hey, I am unlikely to build another.

I have never used it either so if anyone fancies it for £50?

I actually thought about asking  ;)
since it is a beatiful model
but no, since it is not rolling on tracks, and besides, I think I have enough rolling stock  ;)

however, I would be pleased to duel it in some Russo-Polish war scenario

since they are not running in the contest, I can post them here

the OV armoured LOCO

and the tender

of course WIP - these will have to wait until after the contest
the LOCO will be a battery runner

and also a gun barrel I made myself, for another Railway project

threadomancy?
not quite - I promised to show the finished result, and opening a new thread would have required to post the WIP's again
so here goes

constructive criticism very much appreciated, this is my first attempt at weathering

no, it is Grimm  ;)
back to topic
not quite an armoured train, here a "teaser" of my freight train components, to be finished very soon:
A caboose, WIP, (not yet weathered)
I did have problems with the salt rusting method, I could not get the salt off.
Admiral Benbow advised to use only water to adhere the salt, not hairspray, so I had to add painted rust (above on the armoured train, other pictures will follow).

Again, comments much appreciated.

THX Hammers  :)

I have always had a soft spot for the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch narrow gauge armoured train operated during World War 2 in southern England. It's just so "dinky" and manageably sized, not like some of the German and Russian monster trains.

easily achievable with HO material and a bit of Gizmology with the engine.
possibly also usable with some latitude for pulpish WWI and BoB  ;)
keep in mind that the genuine German trains were made only late in the war and copied, captured ones were used more frequently - the germans never learned the lesson in 3 wars....

yes
not because of armoured trains, but because of the value of railway for the initial set-up against the french.
or maybe because of?
so that railway was deemed important for logistics and troops relocation only?
interesting question though...

contrary to the germans, the french failed to use the railway properly, even running troop transports directly into german capture.

could be the point for later miscalculations, like the role of battleships after the russo japanese war....
would like to hear something about that from better informed specialists

Hello there

I thought I'd bore You a bit with pictures of my two freight trains (the ones You might have seen in the "Riga 1919" scenario)
here a reminder

I don't want to flood the forum, so here to my Photobucket
http://s886.photobucket.com/albums/ac61/former user_the_anarchist/Railway/RW-WIP/

every component (23 recently finished) has a codenumber, so same number is the same model, though there might be a difference to the WIP

as always, criticism (positive and negative  ;)) and comments highly welcome  :)
