A son of Aelle falls
« on: July 29, 2021, 06:17:09 PM »
A few pics of our recent post Roman game features Aelle and his sons coming up against the kingdom of Dumnonia.
In brief;
Aelle and his sons led 3 contingents, each of Gedriht, Geoguth, Duguth and Ceorls plus some Frankish mercenaries in one contingent. They deployed on a broad front gambling on the foot warbands being to resist the famed Dumnonian cavalry and be able to overwhelm the inferior enemy foot. The most likely deployment place for the cavalry was on the Briton right so the Franks bolstered the contingent on this wing.
The Dumnonians deployed with 3 foot contingents, inferior in ability and numbers to the Saxons, in the centre, 2 to the front and 1 behind and placed the cavalry in the wood on their left thus leaving the right wing in the air.

At first the cavalry ruse seemed to have failed, Artorius and his contingent took some time to get through the wood but when compared to the Saxon contingent stuck out on the left they were positively speedy!
Both lines lost all sense of cohesion pretty early on (random modifiers to standard move distance) but the Saxons looked the more menacing so Artorius gambled and once free of the wood led his Comitatus in a charge straight into one of the nearest warbands and bounced them back with the initial shock and then forced them into a withdrawal with the follow up. There was a real risk here, each time a leader is in combat there is a chance of death and Artorius was the overall commander.
Next up, Dywel and his Comitatus joined a Pedyt unit and convinced them that attack was a good option and charged a Geoguth band and pushed them back. Cissa and his Gedriht then piled in and stabilised the fight and the end result saw both foot units battered and disorganised and falling back to regroup.

The centre of the field started to get a bit busy as foot from both sides lined up, the Dumnonians being particularly effective with the allocation of the Comitatus units to bolster the Pedyt.
Artorius continued to gamble and led his men against an isolated Ceorl unit who not suprisingly collapsed and still Artorius avoided a scratch!
The deciding event however was Marc of Kernow  whose Comitatus faced off to Cynrim and in a bloody melee slew the son of Aelle  ;D The resulting morale calculation for his contingent saw them collapse and retreat from the field while Cynrim's Gedriht carried his body from the field.
With one contingent gone and another still too far away to do anything Aelle conceded the field. But he will be back!

Great looking game Ian, thanks for sharing. I like the risk / reward aspect for leaders in this period.
