Crimean on a large scale
« on: July 05, 2021, 03:13:00 AM »
Can anyone offer rules titles that can cover the larger engagements from the Crimean War?

My own modest offering, "Bloody Big BATTLES!", covers the four biggest Crimean War battles in the supplement volume, "Bloody Big European Battles!". BBEB includes:

Kurudere (the decisive battle on the Caucasus front - great fun to play)
The Alma (a more interesting scenario than the usual dull frontal slog it is portrayed as)
Inkerman (unpredictable mayhem in the fog)
The Chernaya (a proper grand battle)

In the BBB group files there is also a free scenario for Balaclava.

Eupatoria is on my to-do list but unlikely to happen any time soon.

I have to say these Crimean War games have been among the best we've done with BBB. We fought the whole campaign over two successive weekends. Report is in the BBB group files.

Good luck with finding a ruleset that suits your taste.

Thank you both I will look into them

Two questions for BBBs, what are your bases and how many troops on a base.  Second as Inkerman was on a smaller scale of troops how does that scenario play out?

BBB is generally on 1 inch wide bases, number of figures immaterial. Some use 30mm wide bases, some larger. As long as both sides use the same size it doesn't matter. BBB has a sliding scale, generally from 500 troops/12 guns per base up to ~ 2000 troops/48 guns or more. Basic units are often brigades or divisions, even small corps.

There are some who use a single large base per unit. They need to keep track of hits per unit and formation (line, deep. coulmn of march).

Smoothbore muskets have 3" range, smoothbore artillery 18". There is plenty of room for reserves.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

As vtsao just said (thanks, Vincent), BBB recommended base size is 1" square; infantry units normally between 3 and 7 bases strong; cavalry rarely more than 2 or 3 bases; artillery single-base units.

Troop scale varies per scenario. Typically 1,000-2,000 men or 24-48 guns per base; can go up to 3,000+ for the biggest battles, or down to 500 or fewer for smaller ones. Ground scale and time scale vary as well to keep things in proportion and fit battles on the table.

Inkerman scale is 666 men or 16 guns per base. About 40 bases on the Allied side, 50-60+ Russians (depending on reinforcement choices). It plays out as a thin red (and blue) line trying to avoid being overrun or swarmed past by masses of Russians.
