[Dark Age Skirmish] By Odins Beard!
« on: August 18, 2021, 09:47:17 AM »
I'm usually not much of a historical guy. I like history and reading about it, but all the finangling with accuracy and button counting wasn't my bag. However the Dark Ages is a bit of an exception. As a Brit I have a vested interest, this IS my history afterall. The uniforms aren't exactly complex and the army formation is nebulous at best thanks to spotty historical records, thus giving a bit of leeway.

My current focus is on Ravenfeast, but with the idea being to evolve into Saga.

Hi!
I think that Saga is a good choice if you want players in numbers. I like very much Blood Eagle, and if you like a good share of fantasy or myth in your games this one could be a hit. Besides you won't need as many figures as for Saga. Hope that helps.

Saga is a good way to god. It is one of the best known and played systems for the period.

The first few minis for my Vikings.

Loooong ago I had a terribly painted Saga force, it had one game before my club moved onto a newer system so they gathered dust before I sold a majority of them. The few left I gathered up today. Thankfully I'd already re-painted two for potential ROSD games.

These guys are Foundry Berserkers with Bear pelts.

Now for two more.

These guys I actually bought from here ! No clue what range they are, they were metal and the paper with them said "Shieldwall" but I can't actually find them in the range oddly enough. Not sure what to cassify them as either, maybe Huscarls ? They're wearing mail, have a primary weapon AND a secondary weapon, also nice helmets.

Heres the last of the Saga force, Wargames Factory Vikings I believe. I've currently rebased them and intend to repaint them, also may use some new basing material ideas I've got. Considering how theyre armed (chainmail and a single weapon) they'll probably be Hirdmen.

Added another Huscarl to the group, the last of the Shieldwall minis.

Finished up the Hirdmen. Wasn't 100% pleased with the green trousers, but the shield patterns please me. I don't think they're too bad for my fifth attempt ever at freehanding a design, even if it is s simple one.

I planned to do pretty much the same, cut my teeth on 'Ravenfeast' then move on from there. I enjoy playing 'Ravenfeast' too much now to bother looking at any other options!

Some Gripping Beast Dark Age archers, painted as Viking Bondi Archers.

Limited poses, but a really fun, simple, kit.

Interesting project, and a good start (or new start) with this small force.  :)

Anyway you can't go wrong with individually based Vikings, there are lots of skirmish rules for them.

They turned out rather well. Great start to your Viking raiding force.

My final Huscarl, bringing me up to four. This guy is from Artizan games. Really nice mini.

And to round this warband out, my Jarl. Olaf Sigurdsson, another Artizan mini. This time painted primarily in contrast paints to get across the rich colours his position could gain.
