Biggles flies undone.
« on: August 18, 2021, 10:05:58 AM »
Getting a few of the lads together.
Mainly like myself, RAHAI. (Retired and happy about it),
so we can meet on a Wednesday, during the day. What fun.

A chance to christen my Deep Cut aerial matt, a Christmas
present from my lovely wife two years ago! Dragged, kicking
and screaming from their box on the shelf my 1/144th scale
WW1 Aerial & a nice (i.e. simple) set of rules by an old
friend, Andy Taylor.

A couple of pictures to whet your appetites. More to follow
after the game.

Nicely done. Good to see it getting more exposure.  :D
Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual
Só o Flamengo é campeão mundial
E agora seu povo
Pede o mundo de novo

In the end it was just the three of us, Vodkafan isn't a RAHAI
(still working & real life got in his way).
So Flatpack, JC & I sat down to play WW1 Aerial, for the first
time in about 20 years.
Game 1) JC in an Albatross III was 'On patrol' while Flatpack
piloted a Bristol F2 with myself acting as his rear
gunner.  We were tasked with taking pictures of
the German Air field. The faster more manoeuvrable
Jerry would be a serious threat. Flatpack dragged our
crate round to give me a shot at the Hun, but he was
faster on the trigger & several bursts ripped into us.
              Down we went.

Never mind, we chose new kites & prepared to fight again.
JC stayed German & went for his 'Favourite' WW1 crate,
the Roland. Flatpack & I went for two pushers. He had a
FE2 while I took a single seat DH2.
It was not a good day to be the outnumbered, slow, two
seater. The Roland was soon in trouble, not helped by a
lucky shot from me at long range. Down he went.
We wiped the record sheet clean & chose again.

For our final game JC changed sides & took the
Sopwith Camel. Being ex-Navy he would have prefered
a Sopwith Pup, but I don't think Skytrex ever made one
in 1/144th.
Flatpack went German & took one of my Fokker DR1s(Tri-
plane). I went for a Nieuport 28 in the hands of a complete
novice.
Lacking the skill for manoeuvring I pushed the throttle to the
maximum & tried to play chicken with the oncoming DR1.
Not surprisingly I did little to him, but as he turned to
engage me he left himself open to JC's Camel...
Rat-a-tat-tat & it was the end of the triplane.

A good mornings worth of gaming with good friends.
We will play again, hopefully sooner than two decades.

Some of my images from today’s game.

The cloth looking great, even without aircraft on it.

My first kite being gunned down by the Hun.

Game 2. A very nice Roland as a target.

The Roland gets jumped by two lots of flying scaffold.

Lovely flying machine for game 3.

Terrible end to game 3. Where did that Newport come from ?

Good day at the office, for us retirees.
Cheers Pete.
Let’s have another game in 20 years time.

That does sound like good fun and that mat, along with the planes, is very impressive.

Looks like you had great fun, I'm sorry I missed it but actually I was completely knackered after yesterday's game.

Funny enough I looked at these planes on your shelf after the SciFi game. This looked like a lot of fun.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Good props! Someone in the world has remembered what an aircraft in flight looks like. :)
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

That was JC's idea back when we made them.
By the way assembling 1/144th scale metal Bi (& Tri) planes...
That way leads to madness!
JC (Much MUCH better at the assembly than I) gave up with
Skytrex's flimsy cast struts & used tiny bits of
piano wire instead :o :o :o He has more patience than I.
