South African Settlers Farmstead Query
« on: September 05, 2021, 08:47:10 AM »
Recently purchased a few packs from Iron Dukes Orange River range and it has rekindled my interest is the Cape Frontier Wars period.

Been thinking about terrain and was wondering what would a colonial settler or Boer farmstead look like in this period? Guessing a thatched roof would be suitable but would the walls be made of timber, stone, or something else?

Has anyone else made or bought any buildings that would be suitable for this area and period?

Many thanks

Steve

Thick walls of large stones and mortar, heavily whitewashed; windows small and unglazed (thin hide stretched over wooden frames for winter). Raised doorstep, thatch, chimney. An inclosed kitchen garden is normal too. Gabling on a more established and prosperous farm, trellis and veranda.

https://stelmus.co.za/ - many pictures. It's a fun museum in a pretty town.

You've just made a South African expat a bit homesick!

The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Thanks, it's that sort of detail that can really make a model.  8)
