1/72 Terrain/Buildings?
« on: September 07, 2021, 12:31:17 PM »
I see lots of great terrain and buildings out there for several scales in feudal Japan, but I seem to have fallen down a 1/72 whole for my minis. Unfortunately, I don’t see a lot out there at this specific scale. Anyone know of some possibilities I may be missing?

You could try these:
https://www.wargamevault.com/browse.php?keywords=papierschnitzel&x=0&y=0&author=&artist=&pfrom=&pto=

They are 28mm but are easily scaled down for 1/72.

Or these:

Again not 1/72 but some of the 15mm pieces might work too.

Try reaching out to companies MDF like Sarissa and Blotz to scale down their existing designs. It shouldn't cost them anything beyond time to do so.

There’a range of plastic Japanese building kits by Microace in 1/60, tea houses, shops etc. Hobby Link Japan usually stocks at least some of the range.

https://www.hlj.com/search/?q=1%2F60&productFilter=category%3AJapan%20Culture

Just be aware that some of the range are only half buildings/ frontages so best suited to table edge placement, unless you are a canny scratchbuilder and buy multiples of the same kit. Price is unbeatable and they should work well with 1/72.

This is even more perfect!
MDF though gives me pause. I don’t have an airbrush so am concerned the I might not be able to paint the the smooth surfaces well. I tried MDF once before and it didn’t take my spray primer at all, so the project was a non-starter. Maybe I can find some MDF tips.

Plastic is definitely more my jam, but there’s no good pictures of the buildings on this site to get an idea of what I’m buying.

Try searching for ‘Microace 1/60’ in image search.

I’ve painted MDF successful with both craft paints and house paint.

I don’t usually spray prime MDF - it can sometimes seem that MDF absorbs loads of spray paint for some reason.

By the way, I just came across these listings, which might help with spicing up your terrain:

I don´t prime MDF. I find it takes paint quite well.

Interesting. I'll try to just paint straight on MDF next time.
