I tend to prefer circular, if just for aesthetics.  I also, however, don't play a single rank-n-flank game, so square bases serve no purpose to me.

I prefer circular bases, and have standardised on Renedra 25mm for Oathmark and Frostgrave commonality.
Combined with Renedra Sabot bases they are easily moved.

The comment earlier about circular bases allowing you to rotate the figures can make it a lot easier to get them not stabbing the soldier in front. It is going to be really useful when I start on the Mantic Gargoyles with those wings everywhere.

With my Quarantine 37 order I also ordered FireForge Byzantines for Oathmark. They had a new to me 20 x 20 square bases with rounded edges.

There are another interesting base in the Fireforge Northmen Cavalry.

They might work for cavalry in skirmish games better than the 40mm circular bases.

I would prefer 25x50 mm capsule bases, but currently I have only seen them made by Warlord.

I use both, not sure if one is universally better.

Square is very nice when determining facing matters.

While I use rounds in a lot of games, I went for square with roundy corners for Mean Streets.  Good for facing and urban street aesthetics.

I use rounds for everything (except cavalry, they are on 50x25 squares, but as the edge style is the same, I think they fit well). For me, the only advantage of square bases would be for rank-n-flank... if there would be no movement trays. But there are.

I prefer Square Bases. I admit that round bases are nicer. But playing mass-combat and skirmish systems, I'm more flexible with square bases.

Only my samurais are round bases, because I will never ever start mass-combat with samurai ... at least I hope so.
A life without Samurai is possible, but not desirable!

I use simple metal washers, which are round. I unfortunately haven't really gotten around to gaming since switching to them, but plan to use magnetic sheets or sabot trays for anything where they have to be ranked up.
