Another shout for War & Conquest. Basically a rejuvenated WAB or the game that WAB 2.0 should have been.

It has ample support for all kinds of periods, including Dark Ages, is well researched and has FREE downloadable Army/Period books. It is also tactically a lot more interesting than LR. Unit removal, masses of figures and loots of dice are all guaranteed.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think I am going to give WAB a go, I have a copy of it and we used to play it back in the mists of time...

A good choice, if you already have a copy you can discard it if it doesn't meet your needs. Saves money.

I think you will find the heroic feel to the games just what you want for the "Dark Ages"/Early Medieval.

Wow so many different rules sets available. How do they handle seige engines in games?

Can you be more specific to maybe a few rulesets you have in mind?

As others have suggested, the game which ticks your box is either WAB or Clash of Empires. , figure removal, quick playing and buckets of dice.
