Hmmmmm. Stargrave or Galactic Heroes?
« on: September 19, 2021, 05:50:49 PM »
I've collected various "warbands" for 40K, Doctor Who, Urban War, Near Future etc. and I'm looking for rules that will let me use them without too much hard work. I know Stargrave is popular right now, and I've got the issue of WI with Dalek rules in it, but I know Galactic Heroes has its proponents too, even if posts about it here have lessened plus it has pdfs for vehicles rules and factions.

So who's played both and which do you prefer?
Waiter, my soup is giggling.

I have played both, however only solo so far, so please take this with a pinch of salt.

Stargrave - I like the scenarios and the basic premise, however solo I think is probably more difficult than playing against another player etc.

Galactic Heroes - Again you really can use what you like and its D6 based, which I prefer and I like the card activation system, again I think this game would be better against a live opponent.

On balance I may smash the two together with Stargrave scenarios using Galactic Heroes mechanics.

I would say on the whole Fistful of Lead system(s) are the more adaptable and is the faster play system.

Lets see what some of the other say?

Having played in both modes a fair bit, I'd agree.  The AI in Dead or Alive isn't perfect but bounty hunting gives me a harder time than most "live opponent" games do.  I put that down mostly to the solo complications being more varied and (often) punishing than random critters and and unwanted attention pirates are.  Having a human opponent gets you shot up more but also draws off some of the NPC stuff, while in solo play everything is out to kill you and you can't surrender and flee the table without further abuse.

I haven't played Galactic heroes, but if someone wants more versatility in terms of figure/crew design than Stargrave offers, both Rogue Stars and the recently released Farthest Star are good choices.  You can do some pretty wild builds with both of those, almost any mini can fit into them.

I have played Galactic Heroes and Stargrave as multiplayer games. I like the post game system for Stargrave. Otherwise I would probably say GH. As above I would be tempted to use GH with Stargrave post game.

I have about a dozen micro universe tankers and a few dozen iDaleks from the Doctor Who Adventures magazine. Most of my iDaleks are painted in Dalek Civil War colours (white/gold & grey/black).

I`ve got Davros and some normal silver Daleks (cheap Dr. Who magazine ones), however I cannot resist the lure of doing my unbuilt/unpainted Warlord Daleks as Ironside camo green Daleks :-* wots not to love and it also means that I don`t have to paint all those bleedin` hemispheres ;D lol

At the mo though I have gone "sod it" and have begun working up Rogue Trader stats for it,

Captain = Minor Hero, Lvl 2 psyker (random)
1st Mate = Champion, Lvl 1 psyker (random)

At least with this I can do proper orks, eldar, etc, etc

We shall see what happens, because at the end of the end of day the rules are far more invisible to me when playing than any of the newer sets mentioned above.

I have a tons of those free magazine iDaleks painted in 60s colours, tans, imperials and some black and reds, 7 Micro universers also painted in tan, 7 Black tree Movie Daleks painted like the 1st movie and a normal black tree Dalek painted in "Death to the Daleks" colours.

I want to get more BTD stuff and also CP models, I might post picturs of all I've got tomorrow.
