On the Road to Vimiero - Shiny Napoleonic Hinton Hunt Vignette
« on: September 27, 2021, 03:48:40 PM »
I have begun expanding the French forces in preparation for a recreation of the battle of Vimiero. To see the first units finished in the expansion, pop on by my blog. There are a ton of photos to entertain any Napoleonic history or toy soldier enthusiast.

Really love the use of those 'old school' minis!!  Reminds me of why I got into miniature gaming.  An online friend sent me his entire collection of Napoleonic minis that he painted while in med school during the early 1970s.  Many of those minis are Hinton Hunt and others.  Sadly they are not in as good condition as yours.

Diamonds in the rough then - While Mr. Tennant was a masterful painter, there has been much work to get them into this condition.  Perhaps your friend has given you a canvas on which you can work some magic.  I hope so because stripping old paint is a real pain!

I have considered this prospect.  There's just 'something' about those vintage minis.  Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the minis that are being produced nowadays, yet sometimes ultra realism can be a pain, and a waste.  The old minis bring back memories as to why I fell in love with wargaming to begin with.  It might sound odd, but many of the games played today, especially at conventions and events, look as if the people are playing with a diorama; and I thoroughly enjoy them as well.  But when you go back to the older minis, and the older rules - from the '70s especially - there's just something special about it.   Does that make sense?  Really like your blog as well!

Hi Mad Gadgeteer.  So sorry for the delayed response.  I absolutely understand.  For me one of the joys of them is the shiny toy soldier look.  It emphasizes that this is just a game and evokes a time when we were perhaps more innocent in our knowledge of the real world.  Sometimes that simplicity is very desirable.
