Missed the Bus! (AK47 game)
« on: October 02, 2021, 09:22:05 PM »
Vodkafan & myself got together for an AK47 game.
For those who have yet to play AK47 by Peter Pig,
lads you are missing a great game.

The attacker (Vodkafan playing as the Navy) nominates
three objectives.
As it turned out one was VERY heavily contested, but
the other two... not.  He sat on one for most of the game,
& I did the same on the last one. That had an encampment
and the eponymous 'Bus'. The unit defending that bus sang
lots of songs around the camp fire & had a lovely war.
Now some pictures of the game.
 29  The set up.
38 & 30 My left wing troops in trucks, who do very little all game.
31 & 32 THE Bus & encampment. Move along now, nothing to
            see here.
33 My armour advances. I expect great things from them.

Most of the blood split was over the Township shanty town sprawl.
Sorry that one of the dice trays made it into the picture.

The Giraffe is a marker to show an objective.
From its hill, massed Naval infantry cheer on their
Heavy Brigade, Saladin armoured cars with a tank gun.
Soon however they enter into a firefight with tanks!

44  A wave of Naval militia advance towards the Shanty Town
51  It does not end well for them,
52  nor for my defenders. The close combat is bloody.

Meanwhile my armour takes a pounding,
but they dish it out too.
Support come from an unexpected quarter, the 'Football'
team stop singing around the camp-fire long enough
to fire their Recoilless Rifles at the Navy's Saladins !!!!
The Saladins get plastered, but so do my tanks.

As the light begins to fail the reinforcements arrive.
Vodkafan's 'Light Brigade' (A-Cars with MGs) and my
Jeeps with recoilless rifles. This is my Elite (most
costly) unit & is led by Rouge Dormier, the great
'Bull Elephant' himself (Head of the Air Force) in his
resplendent sky blue uniform tailored by Saville Row.

Mention, but no photographs, must be made of Vodkafan's
last unit to enter the battlefield. His fire support, Mortars
& a heavy machine gun. The poor blighters had no viable
targets & in what proved to be a fruitless exercise picked
up all their heavy weapons & ran to occupy the shanty town.
When threatened by some of my jeeps they set up all the
heavy weapons, fired with everything and...didn't hit a thing!
Must have been too shattered to aim properly lol lol lol.
His A-cars & my jeeps chased each other around the town,
neither being able to enter such terrain. Thus the game ended.

A great time was had & it was a close run thing. Part of AK47
is an after battle tot up. One item is 3pts if the defender was
'very lucky several times during the game.' It was agreed that
I wasn't.  Each move each player may request a morale check
on one unit of the enemies, even if there is no threat.
On FOUR occasions  during the game I threw a one (automatic
failure). >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Great fun though.

Thanks guys. James' pictures & comments to follow.
Bob, the Great Bull Elephant himself, is modelled on
Herman Goering, besides Sky Blue seemed right
for the Air Force.

My pics at last!
Couple of the main road and the townships before the start. The terrain was so nice.

Out of my 5 units, I started the game with 3 on the table. The enemy got 4 of his 5.

I was the attacker. But the enemy occupied 2 of my 3 objectives at the start. Here I go starting to advance on the township across open country on foot. My infantry units had traded in their transport trucks to have an HMG instead.

At the other end of the field my other infantry unit held one objective from the start, dug in among the rocks on the high ground.

But some enemy trucks were coming my way

I had placed my last unit- a troop of heavy a/cars- in the middle  in case I had to support one attack or the other. I decided I had better opt for the right flank and intercept those trucks!

But on the way the cars became visible to the enemy tank unit. The tanks fired at long range and pinned one armoured car. The rest of the troop had no option but to turn about.

While this was going on my Naval Infantry were approaching the village. The enemy troops in the township had shaky morale watching me come on.

I decided to get stuck in and rushed into the shanty town. It would be a bloody hand to hand struggle between the buildings. But this meant I didn't have time to set up the HMG.

The pinned armoured car got moving again and joined it's comrades on top of a ridge to form a gun line facing the oncoming tanks

They fired all concentrating on the lead tank and blew it to bits!

Unfortunately it's buddy landed a 90mm shell on one of my cars  :(

Then the enemy infantry at the storage dump targeted another car with a Recoilless Rifle

This sort of event tends to happen when you sit in full view on a ridge

Meanwhile the hasty attack into the ville was not going well for me

After taking heavy losses they failed morale and ran away
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

But then so did the enemy!

Before running away, I had managed to get my HMG set up facing the opposite direction and had managed to take out the remaining enemy tank from behind by firing into it's engine grill as it passed.

Burning wrecks now littered the centre of the battlefield.

My remaining heavy armoured car reversed off the ridge and went on it's original mission after the enemy trucks

sadly for him the infantry had all debussed and hit him with everything they had. He didn't stand a chance.

We both got our remaining units as reinforcements, so the battle was still on.
I had a second troop of light armoured cars, and a heavy weapons infantry unit.  They came at the abandoned township from two directions.

in AK47 you can't hold a templated area like a township with vehicles, I couldn't even enter it. I needed the infantry in there. But Peter's very speedy Jeep unit couldn't enter it either.
We had a nice little battle going round and round the outskirts, which was frustrating but fun.

Eventually though Peter took three of his jeeps armed with Recoilless Rifles and attacked my infantry.  This was actually one of the funniest moments of the whole game. My troops had 4 mortars, a HMG and small arms. They let rip at the jeeps big style with everything they possessed. But they must have been firing up in the air or any other place but at the jeeps. Not a single hit!
The answering fire from the jeeps was not much better, but managed to kill one small arms base.

The game ended at that point as the clock wound down. It was a clear victory for the defenders as he had denied me 2 of my objectives.
A very fun game.

Thanks for adding your pictures & comments James,
& thanks for the nice comments Mac & Mellis.
The original plan had been to use the game to
introduce fellow LAFer (MacksMechas) to the joys of
AK47, but he was double booked. Family trumps Toys.
Ah well next time maybe.
