While my stonework is lazier that others here
I think a wash is an important step. I have to get through a ton of dungeon tiles, so dark grey craft paint and stone wash (see Les Bursley's washes) is most of what I have time for. I'll mention, though, that if you have dungeons or stone walls, a black brush-tip pen might help, to add contrast to the recesses, including cracks. Also useful for "painting" black on the edges of bases!
