My latest post shows how I scratch-built the wire armature from twisted wire and broom bristles.

Then painted the model tree trunk with a mix of acrylic paints and ready-mixed filler.

The tree armature was then wrapped with poly-fibres.

I have now 'flocked' the tree armature and built a MDF base.

Dampf I think you’re doing an excellent job. I was about to start making pines using the hemp fibre and twisted wire method but discovered a short cut (I think…..so far) using a thing called “Hedgehog gutter defender” (I want to attribute this amazing find to a LAF’er called parttimegamer). It’s a length of twisted wire with plastic bristles that can be trimmed accordingly. It’s pretty tough to cut and the plastic fibres need good, sharp, big scissors but the only errors I’ve had so far with my test piece were my fault (wrong glue and 4mm fibres not 2mm). Today my new cutters and spray mount have turned up so I’m going to do my second test piece before starting an assembly line. Thank you for the inspiration.

I'm aware of the hedgehog gutter defender, I think I've seen it for sale or at least a version of it.

However have you seen the trees for sale in IKEA - three pine trees for just £2.00. My daughter picked me up a set the last time she was shopping there and they are currently sitting on my to-do shelf.

They are some on e-bay but it is much better picking them up direct from IKEA.

Good luck.

I hadn’t seen those trees they would be good bases for larger scales. I’ll persevere with the hedgehog brush for now (I’m sure I’ll regret it 20 or so trees in) and certainly don’t need another reason for my wife to try and drag me to IKEA! They’re great for what your daughter paid but full price isn’t as attractive. The biggest problem I have is my own ridiculous expectations/standards including the fact I would like lots of trees not just the token “here’s three trees….. that’s a wood” approach you see on lots of tables. Luckily I enjoy all the hobby aspects including making scenery even if my progress has slowed to a crawl without being able to play the games that keep me motivated and inspired.

The trunk has been heavily modified and shortened while the base and roots have been built up and sculpted from DAS modelling clay.

The home-made tree has now been fully painted and the base decorated with scatter, flock and ground foam.
