Napoleonic Spanish artillery piece question, please.
« on: April 20, 2023, 08:20:18 PM »
Did the British supply artillery pieces to the Spanish.

They supplied uniforms and muskets but, I can't find mention of guns anywhere. It would be helpful if they did (I have two spare British pieces I could re-purpose to save a few quid).

Thanks,

James

They certainly supplied powder amd shot. Use the guns and challenge any nay-sayers to prove otherwise.  :)

With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Well according to the film British Naval officer (Gregory Peck) helped the Spanish
(Frank Sinatra) dig up a blooming big gun (54mm?),
so... Yes the British did 'supply' a gun. lol lol lol

I love that film except, whenever Frank comes into shot and argues with Gregory I expect him to start singing My Way.

And Avila is still worth a visit. The train goes via Avila on the Salamanca - Madrid line. It's a pretty good three stop (wargamer's) holiday, just tell the Mrs. it's going to be romantic. lol

According to Rene Chartrand in his Osprey book on the Spanish Napoleonic armies they did. He specifically mentions 4 each of 12lbers, 8lbers and 4lbers supplied in December 1810.

I did wonder if the calibre/weight indicates they were captured French items.

Ah, Osprey. Thanks. I never thought to look there for some reason and went for weightier tomes / internet.

Same series Vol.3

"British howitzers went to Abadia's 'pretty good squadron' of horse artillery in Galicia at the end of 1811, and more British guns went to the Spanish artillery in 1812....However, most guns appear to have been of the French Gribeauval system.....Being already familiar with this system they preferred it...."

Great. Not many, but any is good. I have a British howitzer, now destined to go with my 'unidentified unit' of HA. The 9pdr will simply join the park.

My horse artillery of said unidentified unit. Pictured in Vol.3. Heavily converted Front Rank figures and my favourite stand in the whole army. Gotta love Nassau fur hatted heads and Milliput Mameluke style baggy pants (on early war Spanish Artillery bodies) - shortly to sport a British howitzer: what a jumble of bits! :)

4, 8, and 12lbers would almost certainly be from the Gribeauval system.
The link is to an interesting article on Spanish artillery. Page 89 onwards talks about the Spanish Gribeauval system and details the artillery available in the early part of the war.
Unfortunately it does not help with your question regarding British pieces.
I'm not sure the Spanish were particularly short of artillery, it was the transport that was more of an issue.
