With a heady a mix of nostalgia for a WAB event in the Late Spring of next year and an excuse to get another army speed painted for The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge (details below) I present to you a 2800 point list for a Late Roman Imperial Field Army.

I would be happy to hear any helpful hints or ideas on changing the composition of the army. Very happy in fact as I have only really played a few games of WAB V.2 and I'm much more used to WAB V.1 and V.1.5.

***The two Legates will sit on the Foederatii Heavy Cavalry giving me a hard hitting Cavalry unit

As this is Late Romans, I would suggest dropping one of the Legionary units and investing in either more Cavalry, or more archers. Assuming that you are going to be facing cavalry heavy armies. You will need to protect the flanks. I think isn't this the edition where cavalry can march ignoring nearby infantry?

I'll look into it. Cavalry are very expensive on WAB V.2 AoA V.2 with a unit of WS3 Ld 7 Equited coming in at 339 point for 12 models. You also have to take  two units of Equites to take Catapharacts (also annoyingly WS3 and Ld 7)- both units can be upgraded to Scholae (Ld 8 and Drilled but this can start to get very expensive.

You will need to protect the flanks. I think isn't this the edition where cavalry can march ignoring nearby infantry?

Yes, that is the one thing that I love about WAB V.2. I can barley think of any (none freak) circumstances in military history where Infantry successfully put off the march of a Cavalry Unit; I'm sure it happened but was relatively rare.

My original list (below) had a good selection of cavalry but all suffered form being WS3 which without First Charge (even with Frist Charge) is a recipe for calamity if they fail to get around the flanks. Being Drilled will help but not without a very strong centre of Legionaries to pin the enemy.

I feel your pain matey.
It’ll look really nice when it’s painted though!
Lol.

He’s my take, but from a purely playing WAB perspective.
You could decrease the numbers in the legionary units, to say 20?
However you loose a figure shooting if it’s only 5 to a rank?
So failing that, is it possible to field archers separate from legionaries?

I’d take more allied cavalry, which is possibly cheaper?
OR if you want to keep the choice you’ve made, then make the Equites drilled rather than the cataphract unit. Open order AND drilled is very, VERY good.
A millionaire trapped in a peasants body!

Why have the legionaries got heavy throwing spears? That’s early empire, not late

Lol.

I'm giving myself three months, the time of The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge to get it done so maybe not  lol

Three ranks only in WAB 2 Tim so they would have to be in 21's or 14's with 7 archers. Also, historically this is more often than not how they fought ;) :)

So failing that, is it possible to field archers separate from legionaries?

See list at the top of the page :)

I could get rid of the Cats in the second list and go for either Foaderati or Goth allies.

It's both.

The Spiculum a heavy throwing spear based on the Angon came into use by Late Roman Legionaries in about 25OAD and was used to to about 400 AD when it fell out of favour.

So, fine for the Battle of Strasbourg bit no good for the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains/Fields.
