Early-Mid 15th Century Italian/Iberian Figures?
« on: November 16, 2021, 11:56:01 AM »
Hi!

Bit of an odd question, but does anyone know if there are any 28mm figure ranges or kits that could represent early -> mid 15th century Italian or Iberian figures? I'm thinking the period slightly before the Perry European Armies range, and slightly after the Mirliton commune wars range if that helps at all!

Or I guess more generally, are there any early-15th century equipped figures with a lot of brigandine or mail-armoured bodies? My understanding is that the Italian or Iberian troops would be broadly similar to Western European armies, but the fashion was to wear their mail or brigandines as a top-layer over the surcoat. I know there's a few individuals in the Perry metals, or the 1stCorps ranges, but I'm worried that'd run into duplicates quite quickly

Thanks!

I would think the Perry Agincourt line should cover that.

I once saw a Portuguese book on amazon which looked like a more detailed osprey showing an Iberian battle, unfortunately can't remember the name! Most troops did look like standard European equipment but there did seem a variance with the Spanish cavalry helmets which looked like a very early form of the later morion but can't think of any figures with this style. With the Italians , I think in the 15th century the Barbute helmet was almost a  unique Italian helmet, used by cavalry and foot troops. Perry have Italian heads in their European armies range which I assume would work with the plastics to give more of a mix.

Some other suggestions Casting room miniatures an offshoot of Foundry do a small Italian medieval range which show the regional differences in helmets better than the Perry figures. 1st corps also have a few Italian figures in their late medieval range.

They are perhaps a bit late for you but Steel Fist do 2 packs of late 15th century mounted knights specifically designed as Italian or Spanish styles

Hi everyone, thanks for the suggestions!

As a quick update, I've noticed that Claymore Castings are now (as of this week!) doing figures to represent late-14th century Italians, and they definitely look like they fit the bill!

I hope this helps if anyone else was looking for figures for the period too!

Looking at Italian medieval artwork, this style was used well into the 15th century. I am surprised they didn't include shields as Italian spearmen seemed to use them later than most western armies?
