Over the last few weekends the grandchildren have been helping me reduce the "Plastic Mountain".  We started out on the GW LOTR plastic Elves and the kids did a good job painting them and the oldest boy did some basic conversions.

Last weekend we moved on the the bag of Moria goblins and created 3 units of about 30 figures for our own fantasy rules and setting.  Each unit contains a few conversions to make leaders (drummers and standard bearers to follow).  We have a few figures still left over and the oldest lad would like to try and make some of them into cavalry.  I have some GW wargs but he thinks the are too big (I agree) so he wants something different.  What he is looking for is a suitable mount to take a single plastic Moria goblin.  It does not have to be a wolf.  So a cheap source of something about the size of a pony - lizard, big dog etc. is needed.  Horses, bears, boars seem more suited to the other side for some reason.  Suggestions and Ideas welcome.

I quite like this one but do not have any of the wolves.

Check out this thread on the dark alliance 1/72 wargs - they look about right to me for 28mm Moria goblin mounts if they’re still in production?

Thanks - Hannants have them.  I'll keep looking and see what the boys want to use.

I don’t know how they fit size wise but there are plastic spiders from Wargames Atlantic - you might be able to pick up single sprues on eBay  if you don’t need a box full.

Interesting thread, I have been looking for some mounts lately. See below some pictures of mounts I have considered but not really convinced yet so far. Example are Oathmark & Alternative Armies wolves.

For something a bit out there, you could try the Reaper Raptor Pack for getting some mounts.

Good idea!  I have some old Lead Boiler Suit Company raptors that have not been used much for ages.  Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Set me thinking ... terror birds?  Thingiverse has some and son has 3d printer ...

EDIT:  Just tried a "dry fit" of the goblins on the HLBC Raptors and with a suitable saddle they should fit.
so choices?
Dark Alliance Wargs (approx £10)
3d printed Terror Birds or Raptors (small cost)
repurpose 11 HLBC raptors (no cost)

A tad late to the party, but what about Hyenas?

For some reason when I first saw the thread I thought you only wanted plastic miniatures, but I see metal ones posted.
I ended up going with RAFM wolves.

This was after trying some other options.  Pictured here is a RAFM wolf with two Oathmark ones.  The one on the left has been trimmed down (I find they are too fat) and had fur added.

IIRC Dark Alliance do have a box of rider-less wargs. They are 1/72, but since the Moria Goblins are so small they could match without issue.

I'm sure I have seen that done somewhere.  Might be worth trying some Google-fu on that.  I think the wargs are a fairly good size.
If the orcs are small, there are also the wolves from Goblin Factory (I think they are now produced under livence by another company).  The goblins were quite small, so possibly the wolves from there could be the right size.
There are various sculpts of wolves through Ral Partha.
Otherworld do nice wolves but are expensive.

Thanks again, I have the Dark Alliance Wargs in mind.  I also have quite a few metal wolves in small packs to try.  The HLBS raptors are a bit thin so the riders need a big saddle.  If I am careful I should be able to have the riders loose so we can use either.

Got a bit diverted as I am sorting out a wargame for Friday so Warg riders are on hold for a bit.

DECIDED and PAINTED alternative mount for Moria Goblin cavalry scouts

I looked into all the ideas and then asked the boys which they preferred - wolves, wargs, hyenas or raptors. They chose raptors.  Luckily I had 11 extras in my "Prehistoric/Pulp" collection.

The riders have red and yellow clothing and "heraldry" reflecting the markings on their mounts.

Excellent work! Goblins on lizards have a real old-school flavour:
