All American campaign (CoC) - Final Game
« on: December 05, 2021, 12:43:34 PM »
Played the first game from the Chain of Command All American campaign covering the fight around La Fiere causeway.
The Germans literally came within an inch of victory before being forced to break off the attack due to low force morale.

One inch more movement and the German squad would've reached the table edge, meeting the required victory conditions:

A second attempt for the Germans to break through the US paratrooper defenses.
They succeeded, but only just. It was an exiting and tense game.

The last remaining German squad reaches their objective (the opposite table edge):

Great AARs.  The Germans do indeed have their work cut out for them...

In our third game of the All American campaign, the Germans must take and hold a difficult to reach US jump-off point.
To avoid a developing stalemate during the game I decided on a risky assault with my Germans.
It didn't end well for them...

Difficult to hit paratroopers:

An off target German mortar barrage:

Great report!  It does seem the Germans have their work cut out for them.  But you never know what can happen...the Gods of War(games) can be quite fickle, you know...

After losing the previous game, the Germans tried again to take the US jump-off point from the paratroopers. My plan for them was centered around keeping the German forward observer alive long enough for the mortar barrage to open a gap for the infantry to exploit.

It worked, but it could've gone either way. The game was a real nail-biter .

Forward observer wrapped in a protective squad behind a panzer:

US lieutenant and sergeant together defend the jump-off point amid falling mortar shells:

Obergefreiter "Glückspilz" Graber narrowly escapes the mortar barrage from his own side:

The Germans had to win the battle for La Fière bridge to have a chance at winning the campaign.

Although they got across the bridge, the paratroopers successfully stopped them from getting anywhere near their objective.

Very interesting.  My gaming group and I just fought the fight for Cauquigny, and I am painting up a few odds and ends to get ready for the fight for La Fiere proper.

Also, here's an article on the whole affair...  https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2022/05/06/d-day-airborne-stand-at-la-fiere/?utm_source=Full+WHN+List&utm_campaign=98af3baed0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_05_06_10_05&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8768d98141-98af3baed0-46971965
Anyway, great stuff.  Well done!

Thx CapnJim!
And thanks for the article link.
After reading it I understand the Germans only had exactly 1 Panzer III in the area. So using multiple ones in our campaign is not exactly historical.
My opponent and I both don't have any beutepanzer French tanks in our vehicle collections so we made do with what we had.

Although the Germans now can't win the campaign we will probably play the last scenario "Last Ditch to Sainte-Mère-Église" anyway.
I'll post an AAR afterwards.

Our last game in the campaign again saw some memorable moments:

The German medic patched up Obergefreiter Graber 2 times before he finally succumbed to his fourth wound.

The US lieutenant stopping a German flanking manoeuvre with 1 rifleman, 1 LMG gunner and 3 mortarmen while dragging along an unconscious sergeant.

Failure to activate the German panzer when it finally would have been able to take a shot at paratroopers in the open.

The Germans had to withdraw, ending the campaign with a solid US victory.
