Heraldry For William Bulmer of Brancepeth?
« on: December 14, 2021, 05:26:14 PM »
Hello there

Very grateful for any help you can offer for the heraldry of William Bulmer of Brancepeth 1465-1531.

Thanks

Stuart

Thanks, I saw that but was wary as it the arms shown appear unchanged from the twelfth century.

Hi!

I've had a bit of a dig around to try and find some armorials (seeing as William Bulmer was an MP *and* at the Field of the Cloth of Gold I'd have thought he'd turn up somewhere!) but I've not had any luck yet.

I've managed to find a text description of the Bulmer arms, but I'm not 100% sure if they're for our William, or his grandfather *also* named William (Where the Bulmers seem to alternate between being called Ralph, and being called William). From "Heraldic Visitation of the Northern Counties in 1530 Volume 41." I've highlighted where the 16th century William appears though, if that helps at all!

As a heads up, looking at the impalement there, it looks like a bit of a nightmare of quartered arms within quartered arms!

I'll keep looking around to see if I can track down a digital manuscript of a roll of arms anywhere, but I hope that helps a little!

Ah cheers that’s much appreciated, I had a suspicion there could be some ridiculous heraldry but quartering within quartering is quite an effort!

No problem!

If it helps, I've quickly thrown the arms described there together in MS Paint:

I'm not quite sure where the "annulet" on the first and fourth quarter of the impalement would go so I've left that off (I assume it's a single gold ring either above the sleeve, in the middle of the sleeve, or in the top-left corner of the sleeve)

Interestingly the third quarter of the impalement is the Fauconberg arms, but mirrored horizontally so the Neville saltire is the primary item on there (if I'm remembering right, that's the rule for the impaling arms from the heiress of a family)

The second quarter came out VERY blurry, but the individual components are taken from John Conyers' coat of arms here (where again, on the Bulmer arms they're mirrored):

And here's a version without the impalement just in case that works better, considering it looks like William's son John decided to forgo it:

And, just like that, Stuart decided not to use a figure with a surcoat  lol

Thanks again I really appreciate it.

All the best

From the Freezywater War of the Roses database:

Quote
Sir William Bulmer of Wilton.
Grandson of Sir Ralph Bulmer.  Served in Richard, Duke of Gloucester's campaign in Scotland in 1482, when he was knighted by the Duke of Gloucester.  May Have fought for Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth, 1485.
Arms: Gules billetty and a lion rampant Or a label of 5 points azure.

See the attached image.  Adding the five point blue label (across the top) is relatively easy.

The dates for William fit with the wikipedia entry below.  He would have been 21 in Scotland and 25 at Bosworth.

Note that by the 15th century he's not "of Brancepeth" (see wikipedia entry).

Quote
Bulmer of Wilton
A later branch of the Bulmer family had its seat at Wilton Castle, Wilton, in present-day Redcar and Cleveland. Sir Ralph Bulmer was Lord of the Manor of Wilton, in 1310, and was granted a royal licence to crenellate his manor house there in 1330.

 lol I'm the same!  lol

I can manage most HYW heraldry on surcoats but some Wars of the Roses tabards have my poor eyes wishing they were ten years younger  lol
