This thread is going to chronicle my personal warband/skirmish scale pirate project. The end goal is a modular 4x4 table with a full jungle, beach landing and village setup to go on it. The table is going to be built on interlocking 24inch square tiles once it gets warm enough to do some outside work that I need to do. I'm not going for a super historical Age of Sail build here, more of a Pirates of the Caribbean or Treasure Island type of thing.
These aren't really FOR a specific game although they will probably be used for Mordheim, Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago and maybe En Garde.
Anyways, I have started with some terrain builds. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the world's best terrain builder, the last time I did any sort of really large scale terrain work was when my local game store opened almost twenty years ago. That being said I'm hoping to make a spread of at least usable terrain for my board.
First off we have some bases of trees. Just some out of the box palm trees I dressed up and threw on some CDs:
Next I have some pretty crappy 3D printed ruins. I'm not a huge fan of 3D printed terrain and my printer is older and not in great shape, but for something like a ruin it works good enough. The layer lines are a lot less noticable in real life:
And this is my current WIP I'm putting together. It's a cheap $5 aquarium decoration from Walmart that I'm going to turn into a big ole skull cominng out of a sand dune courtesy of a lot of air dry clay and foam. It's big enough to fit a figure inside of it so I migh make it accessible to be used as cover but I might not, haven't decided yet:
And THIS is a cautionary tale. I'm used to a lot of aquarium and railroad stuff from China being pretty off scale or small. This tree was anything but. I'll probably still base it up and use it but I'm thinking I might have to do some greenstuff work and other conversions to make it a more special tree because it's frikkin' HUGE. That's a 28mm Reaper Blackbeard standing next to it:
