5 Months from start to Finish - The Legion du Midi
« on: January 02, 2022, 07:15:05 PM »
Five months from start to finish - The old school interpretation of the Legion du Midi is up on my blog, complete with a description of the uniform by none other than Philip Haythornthwaite!

Interesting! I only read down 3 or 4 posts, so thought I would ask the question here: Who was Dick Tennant? I gather you took over his collection and are working to complete it?
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

Correct.  Richard Tennant worked on his collection of Hinton Hunt and Alberkan Miniatures for over 50 years, completing his planned corp strength armies shortly before his passing.  Both French and Allied Peninsular armies have ~25-30 infantry battalions, 10-12 cavalry regiments and the associated artillery and command structures.  I was incredibly fortunate to be able to keep it together and purchase it as a whole, and then work to expand it (Thanks mostly to Dick's desire to sell as a whole.  There is a very interesting story behind it you can read about here, if the interest strikes you:

What a magnificent trip down memory lane, spent half an hour drooling over the piccys, just like I did back in 1974! I still have PTSD episodes regarding those old Airfix Quarrie rules, all them brayn numbing 'factors and national characteristics'...
I waded through that crap for a couple of years in the early 70s, before realising my hobby was more stressful than mi' job!

I know the feeling!  We have been using a fun fast set developed by the gentleman who runs http://hintonhunt.blogspot.com/   Muskets and Marshals.

Glad my blog encouraged a trip down memory lane for you.

I seem to live more down memory lane than in the present these days! Hope you keep posting the excellent piccys, they're very inspirational!

Lovely work there.  You've definitely given them that certain "old school" look!  Well done!

Thanks CapnJim.  I'm really looking forward to painting a unit without all of the conversion work and that is nicely sculpted.  I've decided on a Franznap Bavarian battery.  Will be interesting to see if I can make modern well sculpted figures still feel like old school.

Amazing stuff, and the history and research is awesome to.

Its wonderful especially to see that someone was able to continue the collection as a whole and expand on it as you are doing.

So often such work is scattered and lost when the person whose passion it was, passes.

Glad you had the opportunity to both acquire the collection, and have similar passion to keep it and expand on it yourself.

Thanks Tactalvanic.  I appreciate you taking the time to read the blog and have a good sense of the project and its scope.  Taking this collection, and I hope improving and expanding upon it, has been a real unexpected pleasure.  I only wish I had even more time to devote to it!  I truly hope that when the time comes I will be able to find someone at the right time in their life to take possession of it and keep it going!
