Trashbash fantasy tower (finished photos, 24 Jan 2022)
« on: January 05, 2022, 09:48:31 PM »
Finished up my holiday figure painting last night and decided to start something entirely different. I've just painted up an entire village worth of Toadstool Brownies from Fenris Games; they're little goblin-esque folk 15-18mm tall and the sculpts are loads of fun, so I figured I'd bash together a tower for them to cause trouble from - one part tower house and one part apartment building.

I started with a paper cup that had contained deeply mediocre but widely available coffee, hot glued that to a chunk of 1/8 plastic scrap, then started adding dormer windows, chimneys, and other bits to the sides of the cup.

The chimney is an offcut of pink styrofoam, and there's going to be at least a couple more chimneys and some stovepipes wandering around the thing.

The conical roof is lightweight cardstock (90 pound, I think) cut into a disc and then formed into a cone. All the bits sticking out (there's a proper architectural term for these, but damned if I can remember it...) are scrap cardboard; everything so far has been assembled with hot glue so it's been a lovely quick build.

Planning a raised doorway above the "A" with ramp or stairs down to ground level.

I think the finish is going to involve styrofoam stones around the foundation and plaster above that, possibly half-timbering on the sticking-out-parts, and probably thatch roof just because that's way easier to fit around the weird roof shapes I've got going on.

This would probably qualify, by theme, for the BSC2022 but as I started it last night before the contest was opened I really can't enter. Ah well, next year!

It is looking much, much less like a takeout cup that once held deeply mediocre coffee!

Even this photo is out of date, it's a few days old and all but one of the small roof areas now have cardboard slates, and the chimneys have progressed.

Really enjoying this build, will try to do a proper update of this thread this weekend or early next week.

Nothing like a good primer coat to tie everything together nicely.

Much progress!

All of the construction is finished - walls detailed, roofs tiled, etc except for the main door, which I'm building and painting separately and will mount this weekend.

Main door is at the centre of this photo, top of the ramp/stairs setup:

Moving around the tower:

The "back" of the tower:

The painting on the various colourful shutters was done last night; it'll get some washes and weathering this weekend, then that's painting basically done, I think, unless I decide to do something further with the main roof.

This has been a fun build, I haven't done a proper trash bash build in far, far too long!

Might do one more round of weathering/detailing on the main door, but otherwise this thing is finished!

A gloriously fun build, pure trash bash from start to finish, and I am really, really pleased with the end result.

The front:

The roofs are all done with hand cut cardstock slates, a mix of strips and individual pieces. The main roof with the combo of cone + dormer was challenging but came out looking awesome.

I'll be doing a big gallery over on my blog and will add a link here when that's up, with a bunch more WIP photos that I haven't shown here.

I love all the little details like the little garden with the mushrooms, flowers and skulls (naturally  lol).  The painted shutters are a great way to add colour to the grey of the stone and mortar.

It was enormous fun. No particular plan, no particular "realistic" limitations, and a quirky set of miniatures to inspire the build (seriously, the Fenris Games Toadstool Brownies are awesomely weird little sculpts!).

I finally put together the build gallery on my blog, with some photos I didn't share here: http://www.warbard.ca/2022/02/21/a-trash-bash-tower/
