Gaslands: Quick and Dirty Track in 6mm
« on: January 02, 2022, 06:20:49 AM »
Made this 6mm track for a death race to be used in a family game night.  I wanted something fast and open, since they are mostly n00bs, and this worked a treat.

The aurface is a desert cloth made of felt spraypainted to suit my taste, and the berms are just red and white dominoes from the youngest's collection.  The cars are from Irregular, and the move templates from Litko.

Quick and easy, and worked a treat!

Warren! My favorite storage-friendly gamer! lol

Glad to see you again. It has been a while. The track setup looks fantastic, and it looks like you could pretty easily stick your city tiles in the middle of that mat to give some "in town" elements to future races. That is the right scale, correct?

Oh yeah.  To save space, I play Gaslands in 6mm.
Had so much fun I decided to spray up a quick track.  This is just paint on felt for now.  Will add drums, barricades, and other 3d features as the mood strikes.

Looks like a keeper to me! Did you hand paint the track/edge markings?

I love felt for tabletop mats. I have a handful of both acrylic caulk mats and just "as-is" felt mats that already have some pretty great texture and colors. There are cheap multi-tone felt options at sewing stores, and I often pick up remnants for the purpose of gaming. I haven't really tried painting any without caulk first, but I haven't had anything specific, like a road, that would have been worth painting.

I'm curious about how many coats are required (assuming hand painting) to get good coverage.

Yes, I just hand-painted them. I did learn from one of my viewers, and used a stencil to get them mostly accurate. There are a few places where I had to fudge it a little bit, to make it look better.

As far as coats are concerned, it only took one coat of spray paint. And then mostly one coat of acrylics for the edges. But I used the red and white pattern to smooth out some of the rougher edges of the asphalt, so in a few places it took multiple coats to get the red or white to really show up as well as I wanted.
