They seem just right for the later 15th century, and the very first Italian War (Charles VIII's invasion in 1495 and the battle of Fornovo). They could potentially just about edge into the start of the 16th century, but things changed very quickly and the further into the 1500s you go the more out-of-date they will look.
Of course there were no end of wars and conflicts throughout Italy from 1450-1500 before the French invasion, and they'll be perfectly suited for this.

I am reading Christian Cameron's Chivalry series (set in the 1350s-60s).  Are your Italian's for that period?

That period is almost 100 years earlier - but interestingly it seems Claymore Castings are releasing some Italians for the late 14th century that should work well! So far they have just released three packs of Italian spearmen.

Well, time for some fire support  :) More conversions - this time mounted crossbowmen.

The first one is a recycled HYW with Perry mercenaries crossbow, gear and an Old Glory metal head. The second one comes from the ACW set with Ansar head (the whole concept shamelessly borrowed from Stuart Mulligan's amazing project), some GS and indispensible Perry crossbow. They ride Perry horse conversions.

Wow! These are really amazing and I love how you made them out of something completely different and yet, they still feel so right.

Thanks for the feedback! And now - with some paint on. I wanted to keep'em pretty generic, so than I could switch flags if need be.

Time to field some infantry!

Italy means guys with swords and shiled, right? Not sure about their battle value, but they do look cool!

A pretty straightforward conversion of a Perry Foot Knight and somewhat more sophisticated ones, all based on Perry plastics, - WOTR and Ansar. Sword arms were provided by ACW, MAA and Ansar sets, shields are filed to shape from the Mercenaries sprue. And GS, of course  :)

Captain Blood, Charlie_, thanks a lot!
Here's some more: the trumpeter is a reworked HYW archer, while the commander is a WOTR lower torso and legs, HYW torso and arms from ACW and Ansar.

I decided to add some more punch to my army. Nothing special, Perry MAA. And a standard bearer- upper torso from Old Glory, legs - HYW Perry, and a brass rod for the flagstaff.

I’ve missed loads of updates!

I’m still amazed that you are using ACW figures as the base for several of these. Great work on the conversions - do you have an idea of the pose you want to get - or is it more seeing how the various arms and legs go together?

Thanks!

fred, good question… In fact, ACW conversions were quite straightforward, it was mostly the matter of chopping and filing off excessive plastic and combining the resulting dollies with heads/arms swaps and gear as well as adding some GS here and there.

But both ways work. I mean, the key consideration for me is to try to achieve as much variety as possible and avoid “clones”. I try to first imagine a pose, then search through my parts box. Sometimes original parts from different sets just click into place. In some other instances the pose is somewhat tricky and cannot be obtained without major surgery or GS. In such cases I may use wire armature for legs and arms and GS or some other two-part putty.

Examples of the two approaches used on my other projects are below.
