Battle of the Catalunian Plain 451 AD
« on: January 14, 2022, 05:23:45 PM »
All,
I want to have a go at doing a bathtubbed relight of the battle using my Elastolins.  I’m having a hard time with the terrain though.  Was it indeed just a featureless plain?  Was there any terrain that would affect the battle?

I seem to recall that there was a hill on the allied left that the Roman wing of the allied army fought over and captured thereby denying the Hun alliance the high ground. I have the Osprey book somewhere so I'll go and dig it out and see if I can locate any more info (and see if that recollection is in fact correct!)

What I’ve seen seems to support your thoughts.  In fact it’s described as a dominating ridge.  So this is what I’ve set up.  Except for the actual Hun figures, all the rest are Dark Ages minis standing in.

Check out Simon Mac Dowall's  "Catalaunian Fields" published by Osprey. He says Aetius approached from high ground to the west and that the "hill" was a ridge that continued that high ground.

Well done!

By the way, the Catalaunian Plain 451 was the battle description that first got me into wargaming.
