A Brigadier, a battalion and a pinch of history
« on: January 14, 2022, 07:20:58 AM »
Comrades,

Now that the Christmas and New Year festivities have elapsed, it's back to the painting table. This time I have finished a long overdue Portuguese addition to my allied army for the Spanish Peninsular (1810 to be precise). Let me say here and now - red coats are so very easy compared to other nations when it comes to painting 28mm figures. For those of you interested in how I am modelling these early Portuguese troops, please feel free to follow the link. Happy new year BTW.

Very nice.  :-*

Thankfully, my own Anglo Portuguese lead pile is no more.   :D

Very nicely done

Interesting that you prefer painting red coats, I find them one of the hardest to get right. I’m doing a similar project but both smaller in figure and unit scale, so will use your blog as inspiration!

Thanks for the kind remarks.

The way I paint, the Portuguese Baretina shako requires 8 separate paint applications and dicing the chords is fiddly. The British stovepipe shako requires 8 also but it's not fiddly (no chords) and quick. Most British centre company figures have simple tufts (all white) at the shoulder whereas the Portuguese all have wings of one sort or another requiring careful piping - fiddly and time consuming.

Eventually I'll need two more battalions to finish off the brigade - but it's going to definitely wait.

How does your basing height work with your buildings? I presume you’re adjusting proportionally.

G'day Blackwolf,

I've not thought about it before. I haven't noticed.

I am recommitting these days to the old In The Grand Manner concept of clustering my building and fixing them on 300mm square tiles - they represent a hamlet, two make a village and three a town. I reckon the plywood to be about three millimeters thick - so what's an extra 2 mil between friends?

Hmmm. To my eye the bases look like, perhaps over a scale foot,it creates (a vision for me anyway)  an image of levitating brigades sailing through the villages. However,I must add;  I do all my basing on plasticard these days ,just different suspensions of disbelief I guess. lol
