That’s beautiful work! I especially like the variety of materials on the base, it looks quite convincing.

Thank you. Yes it does.  It took a while to work out the right mix.  The idea is to have a mix of colours and heights.

Just ran across this thread.  Very nice work on those Forged in Battle figures.  I bought some items from them including their lovely range of buildings - but nothing painted yet.  With their civilian and animal figures, I think they are a great resource for putting together a collection.

As others, I really like how you've done the bases.  Just a thought for the future, when using sand if you use craft paint as your adhesive you can change the color of the sand as it absorbs the color in the paint through that capillary action you mentioned.  I discovered this by accident and now have it in my 'tool kit' as a technique.

Interesting but I glue the sand down with PVA for a secure bond.

No worries.  However, I've found using acrylic craft paint as my scenic 'glue' highly effective at keeping stuff in place, especially after the final matte finish is applied.  The upside of paint is that if there is wear and tear over the years that takes off texture, there isn't bare wood or metal (I use sheet metal bases) showing through underneath glue.  But I use glue for some projects, too.

Beautiful stuff, especially since they are in 15mm scale. Well done! 🌺
