Getting better value from my 15mm WW2 collection
« on: April 11, 2022, 02:52:27 PM »
I have a large collection of 15mm WW2. US/UK/German.

Every time a new edition of Flames of War came out it would be added to. I've bought more versions of the game than I've played it! The one and only try at 4e of FoW seemed to me to reveal that the game system was in a mess - unit stats not available, incoherent publishing sequence and structure and so on.

So, where should I try for a good company [ish] level game?

Asking that question is like opening Pandora's Box...but I'll bite anyway!

I enjoy I Ain't Been Shot Mum by the TooFatLardies. Lots of AAR on www.vislardica.com that will give you a flavour of the game.

"Crossfire" deserves a look.

Blitzkrieg Commander (BKC IV) is good if you want to go up a command level & no need to rebase. It can be played as a company + as well but works better as a battalion/brigade level game. IABSM is good too.

Always. If you want a tense, accurate simulation of small unit combat it is by far the best set of gaming rules ever written.

For a more general replacement for Flames of War I would look at Rapid Fire or the Battlegroup series. The latter being better imho due to its ability to switch to different sizes of engagements depending on what scenario level you want to play.

What's the coverage for the UK (& other) forces these days? One of the criticisms of Crossfire in the past was that it was basically US VS Germans

IABSM is a possibility, and O Group for battalion level, always from the nice chaps at Too Fat Lardies
