Hayes' 20mm WWII Project

Hello all,

I wanted to catalog my work on my ongoing 20mm Second World War project as a way to share with the community as well as encourage my work on it! I have been doing 20mm WWII since I was about 12 (now 39) so have collected a fair amount. I prefer games that have a squad as the base/unit. I have mostly used Advanced Squad Leader rules and 4" GHQ hexes for terrain. I have also dabbled with Cross Fire, Rapid Fire, Cross of Iron, Fireball Forward, and the Battlegroup rules. I have figures and terrain for NW Europe, Eastern Front, and PTO.

This year I am hoping to expand my PTO collections, add late war Germans for battle of Berlin, and possibly some early war platoons.

Here is my most recent work- modifying some Sarissa 20mm buildings for Normandy. I still need to do some gutters & downspouts plus I'd like to do the interiors. I really like the kits, however, and find it more satisfying that working with foamcore on this scale building.

Here are some shots from an ASL in Miniature game a month or so ago. Note that my 8 year old son did all the setup! So thankful he is interested in the hobby!

He has done a good job there, & I don't even
like hexagonal terrain. lol lol lol

Really impressed with hex terrain. I always wanted to try the Advanced Squad Leader rules. Used to play loads of board wargames - the likes of Avalon Hill - as a kid.

Are these rules easy to convert or translate into a miniatures game? I take it they are the main reason for using hexes...

Thanks so much everyone for the kind replies. Here are some shots of a 20mm Stalingrad game using ASL in miniature.

RE rules - I love ASL and have played tournaments, campaign games, and a ton of scenarios. What I do with the 20mm miniature games I would call ASL lite. For example, I do not use ELR. Units either break or do not. For LOS I use more like a miniature game true LOS versus ASL LOS rules- I just keep it common sense and when in doubt roll for it. I run the game as the GM and figure out a ton of the die rolls, modifiers, etc. in an attempt to keep the game moving and allow the players to focus on decision making. Move here, fire there, etc. For markers I put the squad stats on the bottom of the stands with a label and just cross through the full squad stats if they become a half squad. For larger convention games I use a basic system for firing at/with vehicles.

Target moved +2
Firer Moved +3
Firer and Target Moved +4

This is slightly less penal than typical bounding fire but again keeps it moving. The goal is to have FUN!







Some items of note- I grew up with 20mm figures and have always preferred that for WWII. The GHQ hexes are 4" and were readily available. So that is what I started using. In hindsight the hexes need to be larger for 20mm. Really 6mm is ideal for 4" hexes, maybe 15mm would work too. But I am too well along now to change. I have thought about doing terrain mats later on and use a 6" stencil.

One more of ASL in miniature- here is one of the landings on Gavutu & Tanombogo we did many years ago at Historicon. Depicting the Marine landings off of Guadalcanal on these two islands connected by a coral causeway.

Several of the companies that do battle mats,
will also do custom ones. Have a look around,
you might find that they will do the hexes for you.

Here are some shots of an ASL in miniature game many years ago at Williamsburg Muster in Williamsburg, VA. It featured a Russian attack against Wehrmacht and Falshirmjager holding a small Russian.
