Midpoint, I’ve gone exclusively for sabot bases for TTS and a single big base for ECW. Prior to the release of TTS I tried Impetus and the 12cm Impetus unit width was perfect for TTS. I now use Impetus sized bases with individually based figures that can they be used also for say Saga or Infamy.

Nothing wrong with a bit of multi-dimensionality to a collection. Everyone has their own concept and set of limits and preferences.

I agree. I'm now minded to do my armies on unit sized basing where possible. Speeds up everything. How you fill those bases is up to us and our aesthetics. I picked 12x6cm as a good standard for armies from throughout history - a Punic game on these mats is available in the Ancients section of this forum. And I'll use it for Rommel.

If I was exclusively a smaller scale gamer I might have gone smaller - 8-10cm, but I'm spread out over the usual sizes. Depends on the collection.

I got a mat with a 12.5cm grid as that added a fair few extra boxes to a 4’ deep mat compared to the more normal 15cm grid

Yes - a couple more rows and columns can really help with a game. Reserves and flanks.
