What materials for scenic tiles? Warping etc.

Hi all. I’m thinking of constructing some 3D tiles for a dungeon crawl style set up.

I’m sure it’s been asked before but I’m looking for the best durable base for each component that hopefully won’t warp.

I want to top each tile with blue styrofoam and etc textures in, glue sand too etc but figure I should have a more durable base.

Open to suggestions!

Stock up with table mats, I get mine from charity shops.
The only problems are:-
No standard size.
Rounded corners.
No reliable supply.

Positives:-
Cheap.
Nicely prepared.
Even if you glue two together (back to back to reduce warping)
the advantages still apply.

Whatever base you choose, apply filler etc as dry as you can.
 This will reduce warping. It is a good idea to place weights on
top as your work dries.

I use 1/8" hardboard as the base.  If I'm using pink/blue foam on top that's all. If it's going to be exposed, I add a floor tile to the top. (whatever that material is).
No warping, nice and stable.

Avoid using glues that have a high moisture content such as white/wood glue. Use Mod Podge instead as it dries quicker with less chance of warping. Sealing any wood you might be using might be a good idea, with paint and or varnish. The dense pink and blue foam tends to keep its shape unless using very thin sheets and the wrong glue.

Test a few pieces first and leave them for at least a month - as I have sometimes found things warp a long time after the initial build.
