Flatpack’s Vietnam. Page 5 Second game in the jungle.
« on: April 10, 2022, 08:19:08 AM »
A few of us have been building up forces in 28mm for Vietnam games.
Yesterday we played our first game.
We used the Empress Bohica rules.

Scenario was, US marines dropped off table then entered, to investigate the local village, as VC had been seen in the area.

Here’s the layout.
US troops will arrive half way along left edge, between the paddy fields and the jungle.

All seems calm before the American arrival, as villagers go about their daily chores.

So the game begins.
US players have 2 troops of US marines, and a single US marine command unit, totalling 12 figures on the table.
They SLOWLYYYYYY take to the field.

With the command unit racing ahead.

A couple of the villagers, leave the fields and wander over to greet the US troops.

With all 12 American troops now on the table, the VC player springs his trap.
From the jungle edge, VC appear from the spider holes and gun down the US troops, who had no idea they were there.

It’s absolutely chaos as the US troops are cut to pieces, by gunfire and grenades.

The officer in charge, being one of the first to fall.

So the Americans decide to get out of there ASAP.
With the VC fading away back into the jungle, the US troops gather up their comrades and medivac out.

Normality  returns to village life.

The end....for now.

Bob, as usual provided wonderful scenery, figures & scoff. Any shortcomings on the
day I put down to the rubbish umpire (Me).  I thought the Americans would have
gotten further, faster.  The VC attack was as deadly as it was quick. 'Game over man!'
Of my carefully drawn up 'Random Events Chart' only used FOUR, & two of them were
blanks.  The Yank team leader was a hard bitten veteran of the war. A lot was expected
of him, but he was the first KIA!!!!! The two Marine fire teams were new 'in Country' &
very worried. Not much was expected of them, but the first the random event had one
team Goofing off (smoking pot) for two moves. Hell we only got four moves in total, then
Marines were dragging bodies back to the LZ.
The VC lost 2 figures (out of 8) KIA, but they removed the bodies before the Yanks could
confirm them.
Definitely a VC win.
Shame we got to use so little of Bob's great set up.
Remember... don't forget to blame the Umpire. :D

I am going to bite the bullet and be more critical of the rules. As is, too time consuming, need drastically streamlining.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

As the visiting player I feel slightly embarrassed to have inflicted such a crushing defeat on the US forces on their first outing but tactical brilliance can't be hidden  lol lol

We had a fine time as always but the rules were a considerable disappointment - I think Flatpack is going to round up our comments for the Facebook group so I'll say no more.

Well, no wonder the US boys took it in the shorts.  What do you suppose the blast radius was for THAT grenade?   :o

Very nice figs and really nice terrain!  With only 4 turns in, maybe another go at that scenario is in order...

I like BOHICA.  I was concerned about the "completeness = complexity" bit too, and the first few turns in our game (in a shameless plug, see my thread) went slow as we learned the rules.  BUT, as we went through them the pace picked up.  The first 3 turns took twice as long to play as the last 3 turns in our game.  I plan to run our scenario (twice) at a con (Drums at the Rapids, in Perrysburg, OH, USA) May 21, so we'll see how it works in that venue.  Of course, I'll report here on the illustrious LAF!

Looking forward to your report (& pictures?).
There are plans afoot to play the scenario again
in a few weeks time. Watch this space.

I do indeed plan to post illustrated AARs.  Stay tuned after May 21!

And looking forward to seeing how that re-fight goes!

Nice table and report. I have to second CapnJim. The rules need a bit time to learn but then they are really nice to play.

Wasn’t there so couldn’t comment but wouldn’t it be fair to say that of any game the first time of playing?

Maybe chalk this one up to experience and give it a few more airings?

Was it a prescribed scenario you were playing or one you’d made up?

The table looks bloody great Bob.  I especially thought you’d managed to make it look like it had just rained…….your addition of flock over the top of the shiny mat worked a treat!

Lets be honest here.
We know we all struggle with a new set of rules, and that happens every time.
I’m sure we can overcome any issues we encounter, and I’m sure a lot of time and effort has been put into them.

Hush lads.
I have been in communication with Paul Eaglestone (the author)
& he is going to listen to any constructive criticism. He knows there
are some typos & I fully accept that a lot of the problems were
down to ME the umpire. I have made Paul aware of questions I
have & suggested some ways I THINK they might be dealt with.
It is however HIS set of rules. Just because I am having difficulty
with my first attempt does NOT mean that I would give up on BOHICA.
Several LAFers have already recommended persevering with them.
They are right in this. When Paul has put me right on some of MY
stumbling blocks I will try again.
I hope this calms down the 'situation' It is, all in all a game of toy soldiers.
