Well, only 35 years since I first considered painting one, I have finally got around to it...my first ever Dragon!

A Grenadier Shire Dragon from the Dragon Lords range (Series 2, 1985).
Sculpted by John Dennett.

I have always really liked the pose on this fella, so much character. I was tempted to conert it a little (by adding a hat and pipe) but decided that it is too nice as it is to tinker with it.
He was originally bought to use with my stalled Melnibonean army as an alternative to the Dragon Lord entry in the WFB 3rd Edition High Elf list that I was using.
The base actually has a 'sabot' feature created for including it's dismounted 'rider' which I have filled with tufts.
As I have just discovered that the Dragon originally came with bonus figures I may go back and uncover that and use it if I bother getting the figures.

A really awkward figure to photograph, as his neck projects so far forwards making it a pain to get the camera to capture all areas at once.

Here are some other shots form alternative angles...

'Why so serious?'
 ;)

It now has me eyeing up other Dragons from the range....

Wonderful job there! I love the colour choices; they work really well.  8)

And she does have a passing resemblance to that dragoon of a Lobelia Sackville-Baggins...

That brings back memories and you certainly did it justice.

Wow that's lovely.  I really like the colour combo you've chosen.

Oddly that was the first ever Dragon I painted, as a fresh faced 10 year old. Your's is a little better painted than mine was  lol.
Despite the name I wanted mine to be a scary red dragon like the cover of the D&D basic box so I slathered mine in red enamel  paint, with some horrendous black lining a guy at the wargames club had taught me, and finished of with a big dollop of gloss varnish. I was so proud of that Dragon at the time. :?

Have you got the minis that came with it from memory it was a Hobbit, a Robin Hood looking Bard and an elf with a harp? Guess that would explain why the dragon is clicking his claws like a demented Jazz singer.

Thanks, chaps.
Much appreciated.

The pose is brilliant, I love it!
I only found out about the 'bonus' figures recently, but will probably pass as I only painted this fella on a whim, no idea what I will even do with it if I am honest.

"Did I ever tell you how I got these scars?" ;)

Well spotted.
 ;)

I guess I was far too subtle with it.....

I don't think people would associate a dragon to be that person ;)  lol

Damn fine job on an old beaut like that!

That's excellent, a great piece of painting. I echo the comments on the colour choices, they work really well, even though I thought you were Joking.
