New Anglo-Saxon 15mm project
« on: April 22, 2022, 07:11:06 PM »
I put 15mm gaming behind me nearly 20 years ago, and didn't plan to resurrect it. Then Wiglaf Miniatures released their 15mm Age of Penda range.

Even though they are designed by Mark Copplestone, and are of one of my favourite period (Pre-Viking Invasions England), I thought 'no, too many other projects.' Then Matt walked in, got some and said 'lets do a DBA campaign with them'. At that very moment I also had the new Army Painter Speedpaints in my hand.

Hmmmm, okay.

So I glued some spears in the figures hands and sprayed them white (I should have let the glue dry, got some clumpy hands on this batch). Then I had a go with the Speedpaints on 4. I don't love the effect, but I think I can get the army done real quick so I'm going to carry on with it.

I'll update you as I get on.

(I'll have to clean the figures up better on the next batch, Speedpaints are unforgiving on mould lines).

Great start to your army. These are super figures and I am in the middle of painting some of the armoured one. Hopefully the range will be expanded soon.

That's the problem with this hobby - it sneaks up on you while you are busy with something else...

Nice set of figures and impressed by your results so far.

Great stuff Nick. I'll bring the Kingdom of Sussex up to give your Mercian chaps a battering once your army is ready!

Ace.

Here's the first three bases done. This Speedpaint look isn't exactly what I want from my figures, but I'm going to do the army with them anyway. I can always do a 2nd army the old fashioned way  o_o

Been there done that got the T-shirt  lol I keep trying to find ways to speed up my painting but always end up returning to more or less the same technique I've been using for decades  lol

As soon as I am able it's a trip up the A1 and a visit to David Imrie to see how he goes about his extremely prolific and mega high standard work!  8)

The armoured warriors undercoated and ready for some 'speed'. There's not a metallics speedpaint, so there will be a lot of old style painting and washes on the mail and helmets.

Looks pretty good. Don’t worry too much about the speedpainting, it’s the massive look of whole formations that will do the trick!

Just seen your article in WI about contrast painting the Wiglaf miniatures

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=16501

I'm doing much less work than you did, purely undercoat white and paint on 'Speedpaint'.

Granted, I could probably get away with less, yours look pretty sharp for just one coat.

The next three bases are done (not scenic'd yet). It's the General and 2 Hird bases.
