Thank you for the kind comments.

I'm away for a couple of weeks as of tomorrow but do have plans to continue this adventure, some with the Dead or Alive rules bounty hunting, some with conversions from solo Frostgrave games and also a dungeon crawl type game (using the ideas from Frostgrave Perilous Dark) where I randomise the rooms, contents, friends, foes and loot whilst exploring space wrecks.

Bedriften will also act as the transport for specialist forces at times for one off scenarios to add interest, and I'm thinking of adding ship combat at some future point to round out the gameworld a bit more.

HOPE ETERNAL: THE ACCESS CODES

2347.137.01

We were called by our contact in the Phoenix Quadrant warning us to stay away as a large Pirate faction were currently making repairs to their fleet at Risen Docks, and their command were asking some quite pointed questions about Einherjar ships that berthed there.

The fleet were to be at Risen for at least 10 days, possibly more, she said so we had time to burn and she had a job for us.

Nothing spectacular but should be a good payday nonetheless; a simple data grab from a town in the back of beyond, supposedly linked to a high profile prisoner.

All we need to do is get in, get the access codes, up-link to the patron and away.

2347.139.11

We wondered into town separately in pairs and slowly made our way to the entrance gates to the central compound. There was a lot of opposition scattered around and plenty of nearby buildings which most likely contained more.

We were fairly confident of a quick job and that was the plan – my error was in not sticking to the plan and trying to get more loot than required to get the job done.

Greed I suppose, and it could have really ended badly.

I initially tried to get into the compound via the East gate, sweet talking the guard who was having none of it.

Meanwhile, Svend tried the West. I’ve no idea if it was Svend’s poor communication skills or if the guard as just jumpy but suddenly klaxons were sounding all over and more Ruffians appeared to join the 8 we had already noted.

We rushed getting into the place now and I was fortunate to locate the data packet almost immediately, albeit guarded by 2 Pirate Troopers.

A firefight ensued and 3 Ruffians were killed along with one of the Pirates, unfortunately Svend and 2 of our Troopers were hit in the process, the latter badly.

As our Codebreaker unlocked and up-linked the data the rest of us fought to keep him safe and a path to the dropship clear.

As the second Pirate Trooper was eliminated and the path out of the combat zone was cleared I made my mistake.

I called for the crew to hold, destroy the Ruffians in the compound and bag the physical loot stored there.

The firefight to achieve this left me with 3 crew out of action, one loot had been secured and Svend badly wounded.

Ordering a move back to the dropship we fought for each metre of ground gained, finally leaving the combat zone with a valuable looking crate and the satisfaction of a job completed.

Unfortunately another 3 crew, including Svend, were put out of action and only 4 of us left the field relatively unscathed.

I commit to a full review by the Council as to my actions and will abide by their punishment if warranted.

On a brighter note, the data was successfully received by our patrons, all crew made a full recovery and we have a little more cash in the bank, First Mate Svend Ageson has learned a new skill and Trooper Ochreson has been promoted to Gunner.

As is my wont I have included some images taking by my personal combat recording drone; they’re not particularly useful for mapping the progress of the battle but do show the forces we were up against.

This is a quite terrain and miniatures intensive campaign, at one point I had 21 Ruffians on the field of battle - good use for my WOTC Stars Wars stuff.

Next Scenario requires four 8" by 4" railways cars and an air sled for my crew to use. The author suggests just using rectangles of paper to represent the roof of the car and then have four rectangles of paper next to the table to show the inside of the cars.

Battles will go on both on the roof and inside.

I'm really not mad keen on 2d paper representations but also not sure about the time put into terrain with limited use - need a think.

There are several MDF kit Mag-lev trains available:

https://www.terrakami.com/store/index.php?id_category=12&controller=category&id_lang=1
https://banduawargames.com/en/vehicles-and-machines/14921-mag-lev-train-8435682705219.html
https://ttcombat.com/products/mag-lift-train?_pos=4&_sid=67292dbb5&_ss=r

There used to be a free download 2d pdf file available at the infinity games website of the mag-lev cargo train, but it's no longer there. It's still 2d but looks better than pieces of white paper.
I have the pdf, PM me if you're interested.

2347.144.18

So the data trail has led us here, high in the mountains on a borrowed Grav Sled, waiting for the Maglev carrying Chella Rean. Our employer wants to speak to her rather urgently.

2347.144.23

The Maglev arrived precisely on time and we swept in on our sled. There was some security on the top of the train and numerous security drones flying in the vicinity.

Whilst I led a team taking out the drones Svend took 2 crew into the end carriage, radioing moments later to report he had found Rean, guarded by two supermutants – first time lucky.

The mutants attacked putting one crew member our of action, we lost another to a drone when it scored a critical hit.

We recommenced our assault on the drones as 2 more appeared when Sven reported that he had our target released from her chains and was heading out with her, whilst another trooper headed in to hold up the mutants.

As the remainder of the team gave covering fire Rean jumped into the Sled and I radioed for all our crew to prepare to depart.

As more drones appeared we waited for the crew on the Maglev to jump to safety, once this was done we hit the brakes on the sled and the train disappeared into the distance.

Mission accomplished with no loss of life but no extra loot either.

I will take that as a win.

Unfortunately my observation drone was hit in the first exchange of fire so no images are available for this encounter.

A speedy game as I found the target in the first car we tried and barely rolled under 15 the whole game.

I avoided taking pictures as the board was boring and uninspiring, basically 9 pieces of card which, although nicely coloured, were still just pieces of card.

I wish I'd spent longer buying or building a proper train but, then again, that would have been quite a bit of money and time for one scenario.

I think I'm going to drift away from the author's vision a bit and use this campaign less as rules and more as guidelines (Aaarggh) so my final point is the same but the journey may not be as described.

This should allow me to focus more and playing and less on agonising over how to get 15 Grothek Spawn and 2 spaceships and a load of water snakes etc.

That sounds like a good idea. I have been really enjoying reading you batreps, and felt the urge to dig out some of my sci-fi skirmish stuff. Not sure whether to go Firefly-style or Stargate at the moment.

So I've not returned to this campaign for a while although I kept thinking about doing so.

In the end I decided that I wanted a more open interpretation of my 'universe' which would allow me to mix and match different characters, groups and rulesets in the same galaxy.

I toyed with ways to adapt what I'd already done in Bedriften but, in the end, concluded I would like to make a new start.

Consequently I'm folding up this campaign but still felt the (geeky) need to not just leave it hanging, so I have a final in story post to close off the tale.

Admiralty Statement

It is with great sadness that we have to report that Bedriften was found last week drifting and powerless in interstellar space.

All crew on board were certified dead and committed to the stars as befits heroes of Assandon, the Blessed Homeworld.

Her logs indicate that after completing her mission to end pirate control of this sector she succumbed to the activation of an undiscovered Armageddon virus in her system.

The virus systematically disabled her defensive and offensive capabilities, while simultaneously sending an alert to a pirate drone carrier which was still active.

Records show that Bedriften and crew continued to battle with honour during the attack as Bedriften slowly shut down, and that all drones and the carrier were destroyed before they drew their last breaths.

The sacrifice of Bedriften, her captain and his crew freed this sector from pirate domination and tyranny.

Let the record show that all crew, without exception, will posthumously receive the Order of Tor.

Rest well, Warriors of Assandon.
