Awning Advice
« on: May 31, 2022, 06:39:12 PM »
I’m wanting to add an awning to a building, but I want something simple & strong enough to be able to put figures on without getting damaged.

Does anyone have any advice on what I could use please?

With good supports and material preparation, you could do it with paper even (coated in PVA).

It depends on the type of awning you're thinking of, but I'd wager using balsa and/or other wood will give you all the strength you need (unless you'll be wanting multiple metal Space Marine Dreadnoughts up there of course  :D ).
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Baby wipes, patted dry and re-soaked in thinned PVA, are great for all sorts of fabric modelling. They're stronger than paper and won't fall to bits when soaked, and when wet their folds and drapes form more smoothly than paper does.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps  :D

It’s just for Pulp games, I can imagine the kids wanting their characters to jump down from the roof onto the awning, so no space marines or dreds  lol

Baby wipes is good call

I’ve always used three ply tissue folded over once to make tarps…trick is not to make them too big.

The most realistic and arguably strongest would be to use proper cotton hankies…you’ve reminded me I need to pick some up…..soaked with ova they are virtually indestructible and can span better distances.

Wouldn't the weave be oversized though?

Well I had a play about yesterday & rather than make an awning I made a quick market stall & used a wet wipe for the fabric roof

Here’s a couple of quick pictures, I think it looks good & is pretty strong

Definitely a great idea from Fitz 👍

Tissue with water/pva is always great.

Best method:  drink bubbly, use the "lead" foil.  (Unfortunately, my Cold Duck has no foil, just a screw cap. 😒
