Perilous Island 3: At Death’s Door
« on: June 06, 2022, 07:41:40 AM »
Time for the next chapter in our Perilous Island campaign. I spent some hobby time this week painting up some plot points. The 2 night watchmen were made from some Wargames Factory WWII Americans with heads from Wargames Atlantic Irish and Partizans. Meet Stavros and Nicholas, a father and son team of night watchmen.

Our customs official, Mr. Othanos, is from Pulp Figures with a painted on mustache.

I painted a book and added some metal nail heads to one of my crates to round out the markers for this scenario. And we are off!

After escaping North Africa, Guy Steele and his friends arrived in Athens. They immediately went to find Lord Darrow’s fellow explorer, E.J. Demas but were shocked to discover his tortured and unconscious body inside his ransacked apartment. Knowing that any clues here would have been taken by Demas’ vicious attackers, they prepared to uncover the identity of said attackers when a messenger unexpectedly arrived from the Greek Customs Authority regarding a package from none other than Lord Darrow himself!
With Demas unconscious in an Athens hospital and Customs unwilling to relinquish the package, it left Steele little choice but to take matters into his own hands. Learning the package had been moved to a long term storage facility, he formulated a plan for a daring night raid on the government controlled building. Could he avoid the guards and make off with the contents of the mysterious package, the only lead remaining to Lord Darrow's location? Only time would tell.
Unfortunately for our plucky heroes, the crafty Scorpion Master had also arrived in Athens. His minions had picked up Steele’s trail and made their own plans to retrieve Darrow’s package…

Location: a government warehouse in Athens.

Stavros and Nicholas patrol the outer perimeter on their watch. Nicholas, less concerned with his job than his father, was more worried about finishing the contents of his flask than guarding anything.

His father noticed what his son was up to and tried to call him out on it.

Inside the warehouse the log book was safely locked up in the foreman’s office.

Mr. Othanos had returned to work for a last minute inspection of the Poseidon fountain statue that was supposed to ship out in the morning, only to discover that some joker had already filled it with water!

Into this environment came the Steeles and their friends. Guy and Ruairidh approached from the outside, having watched the patterns of the guards for some time. They moved swiftly yet cautiously, trying hard not to startle the older of the two watchmen.
Molly and Penny entered the building through a side entrance, trying to move silently in case there were more guards inside. Molly caught sight of a figure standing near a statue and moved towards him, Penny following close behind her. To their surprise, as they approached the man, a new figure appeared from the shadows. The Scorpion Master was here! He raised his arms towards them and his armoured gauntlets blasted them with the cunningly concealed firearms inside. Molly quickly returned fire but her aim was off as the incoming fire from their arch enemy caught her in the shoulder.

The Scorpion Master cackled as he saw his attack hit home. He gestured with his hand and one of his minions moved out of the shadows to join him. The newcomer raised the shotgun he carried and aimed it at the feisty redhead in front of them. He squeezed the trigger and the blast reverberated in the darkness. Miraculously, the shot did no damage! But Molly was not out of the woods yet. The clanking of one of the cult’s mechanized scorpions echoed through the air. The discharge of electricity with a loud crack followed, the energy beam hitting Molly squarely in the chest. It was enough to finish her off and the unlucky lady dropped to the ground. The Scorpion Master’s exultation was cut short when he noticed that the machine had stopped moving, smoke pouring from its processor core. It appeared that Molly had been able to return fire, the sound of her gunshot masked by the noise made by the robot’s electronic ray. And her shot had hit home.
Other green robed followers moved into view and spread throughout the warehouse, searching for anything that would help them find Darrow’s mysterious package. Molly’s allies also entered the building but were too late to help her.

The unexpected violence had a predictable impact on the poor customs official and he immediately ran in the opposite direction from the action taking place around him.

Outside, Guy and Ruairidh decided to rush the guard. They approached together, with Guy reaching him first. The man jumped back, and as he did, lashed out with his pistol. Ruairidh, unable to stop his forward momentum, ran right into it and hit the ground hard. Guy wrestled the gun from the guard and pushed him against the wall, furiously trying to explain that he would not hurt him if he cooperated. Stavros, judging that his life was worth more than this job, eventually agreed. Guy asked one simple question, where is the package?

After his initial success, the Scorpion Master continued to press his attack. His wickedness knowing no limits, he closed on Penny Steele, 16 year old sister of his nemesis Guy, and knocked her off her feet with a single blow. This was too much for Major Neville Mallory who opened fire on the cult leader. The fading light inside left much to be desired and his shots went wide. The Scorpion Master laughed mockingly.

In another corner of the warehouse the cultist known simply as The Professor had entered the foreman’s office after the door had been forced open by a large companion. He saw the log book sitting open but as he approached, he tripped over his own robes and fell headfirst into the table, knocking himself out cold.
The other cultists engaged the heroes where they could and bullets flew fast and loose. Finn McCool, the large wolfhound that belonged to the Steeles, was able to reduce the amount of gunfire by pulling a cultist from his feet and sending the man fleeing for his life, while missing a few pieces of his robe.
The Scorpion Master began chasing after poor Mr. Othanos, who led him a merry dance around this corner of the warehouse. Mallory eventually tried to stop him and the terrified man was caught between what he believed were two equally dangerous opponents.

Finn, the clever canine, attempted to stop another of the cultists in the only way he knew how, only to find himself laid low in the attempt. Lady Elaine, the plucky daughter of Lord Darrow who had accompanied the Steeles on this journey to find her father, was outraged at the brutal treatment of this brilliant beast, and opened fire upon the perpetrator. Unluckily for her, the man seemed to be having a lucky streak and he took her down as well.
The battle for Mr. Othanos’ help came to an end when the Scorpion Master finally proved the more terrifying of the opponents before him and threatened the man into revealing the location of Darrow’s package.

Things seemed to be going poorly for Guy Steele, as most of his companions had been taken out of the action, leaving the warehouse almost in total control of the scorpion cult. Mallory was the only asset keeping them at bay. And the worst thing was that Guy himself didn’t even know! Yet…
Kicking open the main door, Guy entered the building. The cultists had anticipated this and positioned their second mechanical monstrosity by the entrance. It rushed towards him as quickly as it could but it was not quick enough. Guy had just enough time to look around and locate Darrow’s package against the wall, right where the guard had said it would be.

Then the metal beast was upon him, claws snapping at his legs, and it’s stinging tail loaded with deadly poison flashing towards his face. Guy, an accomplished close range fighter, was more than a match for the monster. He pinned the robots claws to the ground with his own feet and caught its tail in both hands before it could deliver it’s venomous payload. With a wrench of his arms, he snapped the stinger off, then proceeded to dismantle the rest of the machine in an expert fashion. Across the building the Scorpion Master heard the sounds of his pet being taken apart and screamed in frustration. Guy’s laugh was the only response he got.

In the foreman’s office, another cultist was trying to decipher the log book. Page after page after page gave him no clue as to where the package might be located, but he was determined not to give up. His master needed this information. Unbeknownst to the man, what his master really needed at the time was his tommy gun blasting away at the hated Guy Steele, not being propped against a table while the idiot read a book…
Said master, feeling victory slipping through his fingers, opted to take his frustrations out on Major Mallory. The old veteran decided to beat a hasty retreat, moving away from the villain before him. He was not to escape the Scorpion Master’s clutches so easily as the green robed arms raised and the hidden guns fired once more. Mallory tried to return fire but was ineffective. He was knocked to the ground by the Master’s vengeance.

His league in tatters, friends and allies bleeding and injured, Guy did what they had come to do, and retrieved the mysterious box. Through the darkness, he vaguely saw his companions slinking through the side door, retreating to lick their wounds and investigate what exactly Darrow had sent. Despite the pain suffered, they had won the day!

Outside, Nicholas the night watchman, wandered drunkenly back and forth along a short strip of path in front of the building, glad he had chosen to ignore the commotion inside and finish his flask instead.

Your AARs have been delightfully entertaining and amusing. Greater still is the fact that you have been playing these games with your kids, that's just too cool. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by myself and obviously others and like them I will hopefully look forward into more adventures within this delightful setting.
We haul ours to kick theirs.

I figured the Scorpion Master had something up his sleeve.  Damnable scoundrel, I say!  And it nearly worked.  Three cheers for Guy for absconding with the package!

Another Boo hiss to soppy Guy, let the Scorpion Master loose on these interfering do gooders, although I have to say that Nicholas the night watchman, seemed to have the best idea.

Bring on the next episode as quickly ss you like. ;)
